The Doncaster really looks nice, with plastered columns, wood panels, fancy windows, and carpets. Downstairs is a sports bar, upstairs has a large bistro, a lounge bar, and a terrace (the smoking area – unfortunately, youre not allowed to eat outside). However, despite being the only pub for a mile around, it never seems to get much of a crowd, even on Friday and Saturday nights – unless its a race day or theres international rugby on, when it can be standing room only. It closes fairly early.I ate a steak sandwich. It had thick chunks of decent steak, which may auger well for the expensive steak dishes (interestingly, they have self-cook – which I hate – but give you a discount if you cook it yourself rather than getting the chefs to do it). There was not much else in the sandwich to provide flavour – the beetroot relish was hard to notice. The menu said that it came with salad but I only got 6 shreds of shredded carrot and 10 sprouts. Maybe they meant I got access to the salad bar but the menu makes it look like that only applies to the steaks. Almost everything is over $20 and Id like to see better meals for that price.
