Pretty average food (and I LOVE middle eastern food), and very high prices. Apparently they have belly dancing, but I don’t think I will be bothered to go again to find out.
FOOD TYPELebaneseFOOD QUALITYSix of us dined on April Fools Day Night. We stayed away from the banquets and ordered individually, choosing a selection of mainly lamb and chicken dishes. All agreed that the food was exceptionally tasty, fresh and nicely presented to the table in stylish white crockery. My chicken with lemon and garlic was tender and succulent. All the dishes are served on a smallish tray divided into little compartments with each compartment containing a serve of a fav Leb delicacy – hummus, tabouli, falafel and baba ghanoush, with the largest compartment in the middle reserved for the main ingredient and one little compartment containing a dollop of fresh yoghurt. Its a great idea and obviates the need to order an entree or a salad because you pretty much get the entire meal on a your tray. We ended off with a couple of coffees and I was brave enough to go for the Turkish variety which was a powerful shot and I enjoyed it so much, that it got me to thinking that maybe I should always drink this kind of coffee and forswear all others.ATMOSPHERELa Beirut is a largish place with timber floors, that has been smartly decorated with wood panelling and historical black and white pics, with middle eastern themes, on the walls. The low lighting and fairy lamps adds to the rather sombre and darkish tone of the place. I was surprised to read on their website that they only opened here in Nov 2014, as it has the look and feel of a place thats been here much longer. Theres booth-type seating and also seating in the generalised areas in the back and the front. On the Sat night that we dined, there was a respectable crowd but it wasnt more than about half full. At around 8.00pm an attractive belly dancer in a red outfit came twirling out and entertained us for around 15 minutes, with some of the more adventurous diners joining in, so that added a fun and lively touch to the proceedings. Overall though the ambience is fairly relaxed and laid back, although I didnt care much for the overly heavy and dark design theme.SERVICEThis is where these guys fell down. I did notice some of the wait staff fooling around and hamming it up amongst themselves while waiting for guests to arrive. That wasnt a professional look, and they followed it up with sloppy and unprofessional service. Whilst our orders were quickly taken, things kind of went to pieces when the dishes were brought out, because they didnt seem to know who had ordered what and neither did they know what each dish was. Some of us ended up with meals that we didnt order. Although I ordered Turkish coffee, I was served a Leb tea, but on that occasion the maitre d allowed us to keep it at no extra charge. To their credit though, I should say, that staff were all friendly and polite and neatly attired (some in all-black and some in orange and black outfits). On leaving, the maitre d wished us a pleasant good night and said that she looked forward to us visiting again.COMFORTChairs are firm and tables are large enough to easily ft all the dishes. Although it was a chilly autumn eve, the temp inside was mild and comfortable.MENUThe menu is fairly extensive but its clearly aid out in different sections, on sheets in plastic laminate to keep them clean and hygienic. The whole document is enclosed in a smart-looking black leather folder.TOILETSTo get to the toilets, you need to descend a flight of stairs into the bowels of the building. There are separate male and female toilets and whilst they are reasonably clean and well stocked, the doors and walls are quite grubby and unappetising and desperately in need of a clean-up and a lick of paint.ACOUSTICSTables are well spaced out and as it was only about half full, we did not find it particularly noisy and were easily able to converse.COSTWe paid $40 a head, for one main meal each, plus one extra meal that we didnt order, but ended up sharing and paying for anyway, one cold drink and three coffees. No dessert. Without any discount deals or vouchers, that puts it at the higher end of the cost spectrum.BOOKINGAlthough we had taken the precaution of booking ahead, we could have still got a table without the booking even though there were six of us. I cant see this place getting overly busy on weeknights. Perhaps its isolated location in the upper north shore suburb of Killara has something to do with that.PARKING/ACCESSIf youre coming from the city or the east, La Beirut is on the left-hand side as you drive up the Pac Highway and quite easy to go straight past if youre not alert. If youre lucky, as we were, you could find a parking spot right outside on Pac Hwy, if not youll have to continue onto to Buckingham Rd a few metres north and look for something there.SUMMARYWhilst the food was excellent and the ambience was quite pleasant, we felt let down by the confused and rather shambolic service. Prices are bit on the high side and location is not ideal unless you live nearby. MEMOThis place isnt licensed so bring your own unless you want to have a dry night!
Service was dreadful. Food wasn’t much better. Either they were having an off night or they’ve really not been listening to feedback. Waitress could not actually identify one of the dishes she delivered. The Lamb kebab was basically pieces of burnt gristle with a lot raw onion attached. not going back.
Have been to this restaurant twice and have been very happy with the food and service both times. Portions are generous and their grilled meats are hard to beat – would recommend the grill mixed plate if you want to try a bit of everything. A bit on the pricey side but can’t fault the food.
If you live over the bridge – you know there are hardly any middle east restaurants – this one is just brilliant and is a must doFood – very very goodService – very very effective and quick even when the place is fullAnd yes a belly dancer is working the floor on Fridays!!!Price range – probably a little high per plate but hey it’s not Like you have a lot of choice-Yes I’d highly recommend!!!
Great food. We got home delivery from here and the food was fantastic, definitely will be ordering again. Will have to visit the restaurant too.
