I don’t have many rules when choosing somewhere to eat. In fact, I have only two. The first is to avoid places that serve chips. I don’t care if they’re hand crafted by a fifth generation potato craftsman, it’s a cheap and dirty way to feed people and I won’t be a part of it. The second is never to eat somewhere with a TV. It’s usually a sign that the food is so ordinary that they have to distract the diners with something else. O Cha infringes the second of these rules, but it’s late and there’s not much else around so we give it a try. I’m not sure what station is on when we walk in, but the sound is completely down so I’m not sure what the point is. Perhaps the owners think that people in this age just don’t get enough screen time, so they’re doing us a favour. Not sure. Anyway, on to the food. The menu is huge, too huge – I didn’t count the options, because if I did I’d still be there. The dumplings and chicken skewers are good choices for entree, though as usual I avoid the deep fried stuff that comes with every thai menu. Stir fry pumpkin with beef is let down a bit by the presentation and lack of any distinct flavour, though their laksa is a hot coconut delight. Overall the decor seems a bit tired and perhaps the menu is too – it’s like both could do with a big renovation. If I did it I would have fewer dishes and a greater focus on authentic thai flavours. I also know what I would do with that TV.
