Banh Cuon Ba Oanh does something a bit different to the other zillion Vietnamese joints around Sydney – fresh thick rice rolls, congee and sticky rice. And they do it well. This teeny corner spot across the road from Cornersmith is busy, squishy and always abuzz with happy chatter. It’s a fun vibe. The food is carby yet fresh and light on the oil, it has a special spot in our stomachs for when we feel like something brunchy and filling but ‘clean’. If that sounds a bit too wholesome then you can nasty it up a bit with the house chili sauce, it’s got a bite.
Never had banh cuon? You need to. These silky rice noodle rolls are a traditional Vietnamese breakfast staple, usually cooked at little roadside stalls as swarms of scooters zoom past. The newly opened Banh Cuon Ba Oanh is about as close as Sydneysiders can get to the real deal. That includes a tiny kitchen cloaked in clouds of steam and squishy tables with ankle-high stools (no joke) that will test your flexibility.
