Ezzelinos is a restaurant that will deliver but will not impress. We had the minestrone soup, marinara, and the steak with mushroom sauce. Unfortunately, I’m not uploading the picture of the soup because it looks like vomit! My favourite dish was the minestrone, the marinara was ok, and the steak was very tasty, definitely a good cut of meat. Overall, this is your standard Italian restaurant, portions are healthily filling and the prices are good, mains range from 16+ to 26-28. Overall, good food and a clean restaurant.
FOOD TYPEItalianFOOD QUALITYThree of us dined on a warm summers eve in late Feb. Id read positive reports about Ezzelinos on this and other review sites, so I was expecting something better than average and we werent disappointed. We started with a couple of bottles of refreshing Peroni ale, followed by a shared calamari entre ($14) and an Italian salad ($10). The calamari was tasty and chewy and crumbed in a lightly browned, crispy batter. The salad was fresh and nutritious and topped with a creamy dressing. Just the right way to kick things off. For my main, I choose the spag bol ($16) while my dining companions had the lasagne ($16) and the chicken parmigiana ($22). Now, the thing about this place is that there isnt anything fancy about what they do here: these are traditional Italian-Australian meals, but theyre cooked to perfection with love, care and attention to detail, using the best quality ingredients and served on elegant white crockery. You just couldnt ask for better food. Serving sizes are generous too, so youll never leave here hungry. But to make doubly sure that we didnt, we decided to end with a shared tiramisu ($12). Layers of creamy mascarpone cheese with a sprinkling of ground up chocolate pieces on top. It was soft and moist, not overly sweet, and served in a neat little round bowl. The perfect way to end the meal.ATMOSPHEREThe atmosphere is warm, homely and inviting with wooden floors and furniture, contrasting light and brown colour tones and the walls adorned with pictures and award certificates (plenty of those, well deserved). This is the kind of place that, when you step through the door, you know that youve made the right choice. Its stylish yet laid back and relaxed and even though, on the night we dined, it was quiet with just a smattering of other diners, that didnt detract from the mood or ambience. In fact it made it even more pleasant, being slightly quieter than usual.SERVICEOur waitress was efficient, friendly and helpful. Im assuming that she must be a member of the familia as she displayed that confidence and easy familiarity with the place that could only come with being there a long time. She knew just how to treat guests and make them feel welcome and at home. We had booked ahead, but since the place was fairly quiet she gave us the best table next to the window. Orders were quickly taken and food came out promptly with just enough of an interval between courses to allow you to catch your breath and kick back for a few minutes before resuming the feast. And it was all done with a smiling face and a pleasant and warm demeanour.COMFORTWe were happy with our table by the window, which allowed us to gaze out at the comings and goings on busy Military Rd outside. Chairs are firm yet comfortable and the table was large enough to fit all the dishes without too much of a squeeze.MENUThe menu exactly mirrors the one youll see on Ezzelinos website. Its clearly and simply laid out and easy to read with the adequate lighting.TOILETSAs you would expect from a place that gets everything right, the toilets are spotless, well provisioned and easy to find at the back of the restaurant.ACOUSTICSWe noticed sound absorbers on the roof (see pic) which look a bit like a chessboard, with every alternative square housing a rubber contraption. Whether it was that or maybe just the paucity of other diners on this quiet Sun night, but we had no trouble conversing.COSTWith our 25% Ent Book discount (up to a max $25) we paid $78 for two Peronis, a calamari entre, a salad, three mains and a single shared dessert. A modest price to pay for an outstanding dining experience.BOOKINGWe took the precaution of booking ahead for a Sun night but it wasnt necessary as there were plenty of empty tables. However, I have walked past here other times and seen it pretty full, so I guess booking ahead for weekend dining is probably the prudent thing to do.PARKING/ACCESSYoull find Ezzelinos at the top of Military Rd (harbour bridge side) not far from the corner of Ben Boyd Rd, opposite the famous Oaks Hotel We found an unrestricted spot quite easily just further down Ben Boyd Rd near Yeo Street. SUMMARYEzzelinos has been in Neutral Bay since 1982 and their experience shows. Food, service and ambience were first class and we had a pleasant, relaxed and enjoyable evening here. They didn’t miss a beat and it all went off smoothly.Well be back.RECOMMENDATIONEverything was so satisfying thats its hard to recommend any one dish. I can pretty much guarantee that you wont be disappointed, no matter what you choose.MEMOBring along your Ent Book voucher if you have one, for a 25% discount.
Good meal for the price Nice atmosphere Friendly service , helpful with the menu in terms of what to choose. Quite satisfied and will return. Adequate selection of wines by the glass or bottle.
Our friends have been on us to try this place and they fondly refer to them as ‘Ezzo’s’, so we finally tried it out… and went back there again twice the following week! As on their business cards, it really is ‘the little restaurant with the big reputation’, fantastic value and as they’ve been around so many years, they really are icons on the North, the word certainly seems to be out so make sure to book on weekends. Their pizza’s are pillowy soft, the penne full of fresh ingredients and you must try the garlic pizza bread -YUM! On our second visit we tried the Veal parmigiana and spicy king prawns and like all our visits, we loved every bite. They have a big menu and I’m slowly making my way through it all. Highly recommend, great food and service within a homely, rustic setting. Tip: make room for the Nutella waffle with strawberries & ice cream – drool.
Good food when in Neutral bay!!! Pasta was good, we always come here when we want to carb load for a marathon or run. The Italian salad was a bit of a disappointment but all in all recommended!
Amazing food, lovely staff and prompt service! Have been here a couple of times now, Great atmosphere for a date…boys take your girls here!
Our new local. Good pizza and pasta. Friendly service. However can get a little noisey inside when its busy.
