After a 5 or 6 years hiatus, 1 of our fav jap is back. Right across where it used to be, taking over where Mihana was. Renowned for its homestyle trad jap dishes, it seems that they have stepped up their game n venue. Agedashi tofu, prawn, tokoyaki, grilled octopus, sesame spinach, spicy avo salmon roll, white bait, chick katsu donburi, whiting tempura n a couple of sake (cant rem the names), there were no standouts but all was above average. By mid meal, they were running full house, inevitably service dipped. Cant rem if it was thurs/fri or sat evening. 1 more floor staff would make it way less hectic. Kitchen coped well though. Bbs.

This place used to be called Mihana before they rebranded to Kintaro a few months back… Im not too sure if I quite enjoy their food like I used to. Theyve changed from a fancier Japanese restaurant with a variety of sake options to a more Japanese styled bistro. All up it costed around $100 which I found a little pricey for what we ordered. Quality of food was a letdown as well… The takoyaki was definitely the frozen kind and everything was super oily. Especially the Nasuden – it was really hard to eat. White bait was pretty salty and oily as well, got sickening after a while. The sashimi tacos were ok, they had rice at the bottom and a sashimi salmon mix. Tasted like sushi in a taco. The mains took a really long time to come out too. My partner had the Wagyu beef – he said this was actually pretty nice and the serving was quite generous compared to what we have had in the past. Nice, tender and juicy. I had the teriyaki kingfish tempura. This was ok too, I was getting pretty stuffed at this point but it had good flavour and fish was fresh.Overall, it was an ok dinner. Service was good but food (especially mains) came out awfully slow (there was around a 20-30 minute gap between entrees and mains). I will miss mihana thats for sure! Given the abundance of other Japanese restaurants in the area, I think Ill have to give this one a miss.

A lovely casual Japanese Izakaya sake bar serving easy delicious meal. Big serving of salad and the fried white bait is very good. The king fish teriyaki is also a good choice. weekendnotes.com
