Lots of people have recommended Nagisa so I went here for dinner and opted for the teppanyaki bar. Starts with a choice of sides:Hokkaido Scallops, spicy yuzu butter, radish and pear puree, yuzu wasabi cream, pickled cucumber, honeydew melon and shops micro herb, served with matching sakePlump, juicy, succulent and oozing flavour. These perfectly cooked scallops were effectively paired with lovely flavours to compliment but not overpower the delicious scallops.I chose set 3: combination (of seafood and beef). After the side and a salad, seafood was prepared – sashimi grade salmon and kingfish, prawn, cuttlefish, scallops. I loved the teriyaki kingfish, the salmon was perfectly cooked and the rest of the seafood was delicious with a squeeze of lemon or dipping in the soy sauce or miso mustard sauce.A delicious red miso soup was also presented and you also get the choice of rice, I went with garlic rice and it was delicious and full of rich buttery and garlic flavours.Next was the 150g grain fed scotch fillet – marble score 9. Wow, just cut like butter and melted in your mouth. Lovely tender flavour of the meat enjoyed with beansprout, onion and carrot mix grilled with garlic, butter and soy. Also liked the grilled pumpkin, zucchini and sweet potato. So stuffed, a refreshing yuzu citrus sorbet was served which was the perfect end to a lovely dining experience. The atmosphere of the restaurant is excellent and so too the service.@Nagisa_Japanese #Japanesefood #teppanyaki #scallops #kingfish #prawn #salmon #cuttlefish #seafood #beef #garlicfriedrice #sorbet #dessert #foodie #newcastle #newcastlensw #newcastleaustralia #newcastlefoodies #newcastlefoodie #novacastrian #hunter @zomatoaus
This place was highly recommended as one of the best Japanese restaurants in Newcastle. I would have to say it is one of the worst Japanese food experiences. We ordered the king fish carpaccio, either the chef needs to freshens up on his knife skills or learn what carpaccio actually means. There was no difference in the thickness of it compared to our sashimi. Now the sashimi itself would have the be one of the worse tasting sashimi I have ever had. It almost tasted like they used the tail of the salmon, it was very chewy and unpalatable, it definitely did not melt in the mouth. We also had the poached chicken, it was extremely dry, tasted like you were eating cardboard. Food is hardly ever left on our plates and most of it was left. It was a very disappointing experience for an overpriced restaurant. We had to go to Sydney the next day to have real Japanese food to make up for the fails of this place.
My partner and I went to nagisa for a birthday dinner. We hadn’t booked beforehand but walkins were welcome. Before coming, and from the reviews we knew it was going to be expensive and after looking at the menu, we decided on the plate of sushi and the Japanese style confied chicken. We were very disappointed that most of the other dishes we wanted to go for at first weren’t gluten free. However what we ordered was exquisite. The plate of sushi was not copious but just enough to fill in our appetite. And the chicken tasted amazing even though it wasn’t really filling (I would order another dish to actually be full). When we got the bill, we were a bit shocked by the price of the water we ordered: $8.5 for a bottle of sparkling water. It was an overall ok/good experience. The food was really good but still too expensive. And, The menu didn’t have a great variety of gluten free options. I don’t think I would go out of my way to dine there again. Maybe next time I would try the other dine in option with the teppanyaki but I’d definitely think twice for the a la carte dine in.
