Nearly 20 years ago, Istanbuls opening may have driven at least one low-end competitor out of business. Istanbul is still popular, especially late as it opens until midnight most nights, but it now faces much stiffer competitors from a lot of fancier Mediterranean places in Newtown. Istanbul certainly doesnt match them, with the mushy reheated felafel rather than the rich crispy kind, although all other ingredients, dips, and sides in the window are clearly decent quality. The price isnt high, $10 for felafel with the lot, but you can pay about the same for a much better (but different, although similar) offering from Cairo Takeaway. Some seating inside (a few stools at the window and some tables at the back) but best for takeaway.
Decent Turkish food, but nothing too special. The main reason why it is full of people is purely the location. It is the recipient of intoxicated USYD college students and headless youngsters lingering around Newtown late at night after the nanny-state lockout laws pushed them out of the CBD. The snack packs aren’t bad, but an improved meat-to-chips ratio and cheese as standard would be welcome. The pides are a good alternative, despite being a bit too oily at times. The place can get extremely hot inside at times – I like to think the intention is to mimic the humidity of Istanbul. However, none of that matters, as the majority of customers are simply not in an appropriate state to care.
Snack packs are okay, but not really great as they don’t put chicken salt on the chips! The staff there are really chill and friendly at least.
