We dined on a quiet Sun night in late April. When we arrived at 6.30pm there were only two other occupied tables, and by the time we left about an hour later, we were the only ones! But dont let that put you off from coming here, because this place is a winner, and in any event, school hols may have been a contributing factor for the small turnout. The dining area is a large and airy space with a huge bar counter at the far end and plenty of tables spread out over three separate areas. Id say this is the kind of place where you dont need to book. Being so big, with high ceilings and tables well spaced, also means that it probably never gets noisy, even when full, although of course, on the night we were there, we had no trouble conversing. The quaint wooden furniture, black and white photos on the wall and the grey colour scheme give it a kind of old world charm, which I found quite appealing.Ordering meals and paying, as you would expect, are done at the bar counter. For an entree, we choose the edamame ($6), (soy beans) with sea salt. They were nice and crunchy, a great way to start a meal, along with a refreshing schooner of Little Creatures Pale Ale. For mains, I choose the B.B.C.Burger ($20). Im assuming that the B.B.C. stands for beef, bacon and cheese, because thats what this little beauty consisted of, plus fried onions, pickles and a choice of BBQ or tomato chutney. It was accompanied by a generous serve of crispy chips. What a delicious and filling meal that was. The meat was well cooked, but still tender and full of flavour. It wasnt a huge burger, just the right size, with a soft bun that made it easy to eat, without all the ingredients squelching out all over the place (hands recommended though). The twins both choose the bangers and mash ($18), a traditional pub meal with hearty pork sausages, fresh, creamy mash, onions and gravy. We all enjoyed our meals.Service was friendly and efficient. Within about 10 minutes of placing our orders, the meals were at the table. Thats just the way I like it too, nothing worse than hanging around for ages waiting for the food to arrive. All up, we paid a modest $62 for the edamame beans and the three main courses. The drinks though seemed a tad pricey, $16 for one schooner and one midi of Pale Ale.Toilets are clean, well provisioned and clearly signposted, making them easy to find.Parking is a breeze on nearby Carlow or Tucker Streets, with plenty of spaces, which are mostly unrestricted after 6.00pm.Despite the lack of other diners, we had a very pleasant evening here. The food was excellent, service was fast and efficient and I loved the large and airy space and classic features of this pub. Clean toilets and easy parking add to the allure, so we’ll definitely be back.
