We were a group of 6 and had ordered a variety of dishes. However to my disappointment only a few of them were good, including the mushroom with rice paper, wagyu short rib, scallop fried rice and sea urchin roe. The rest had mixed emotions with the flavours didn’t quite reach its peak. Maybe it was “too fusion” for my liking. The desserts were ok, nothing special. Perhaps I had higher expectations due to the calibre of chefs. Overall, you would go here for the ambience, service and a good meal.

We have been following Chase Kojima’s food journey in Sydney ever since he opened Sokyo in Star City many years ago.  Whether it is Japanese fine dining or fast food, he has lived up to expectations thus far. So when he partnered with Victor Liong and opened Chuuka in the old site of Flying Fish, we decided to pay it a visit on a special occasion.

Came here to celebrate a birthday, restaurant is situated at the end of the wharf and we got a table at the window with views of the water and bridge which was really nice. The menu is concise and we tried almost half of them. Highlights were the sashimi platter, chawanmushi steamed egg, pipis and mochi for dessert. The flavour of the fried chicken was good too although batter was a bit thick. Overall enjoyable night.
