As a birthday treat we have been going to the Flying Fish for four years. When we heard it was moving to the Star I thought oh crap.Firstly location. On the wharf you could enjoy the sea breeze watch the boats move about the harbour and just enjoy the view. In the Star you sit in a grey, black and brown enclosed restaurant. It’s so dark and muted. Much too dark for a seafood restaurant.Wine List. On the wharf it was exciting to get their wine list. First cocktails. Different and tasty with the chance to sit on the lounge out doors. Zero chance of that at the Star. Don’t get me wrong, there is a cocktail lounge that looks out onto boarded up shops. The wine list was always a joy because there were so many wines, sake and other wine types I didn’t know. The staff were awesome and would help guide us. It’s always great to discover some new. At the Star the wine list is barley half of what it was. The focus is on Champagne. The overall wine list was a very sad thing to read.Oysters. At the wharf you could select between three to four different species of Oysters. At the Star they have just oysters. Very upsetting. The shared platter. It’s ok. At $220 it’s well over priced. $180 to $200. Atmosphere. I’m sorry to sad is lacking. Sure it has huge windows, music playing and excellent staff but there is no connection with the harbour. Instead your in a very muted and half empty restaurant on a Saturday afternoon. Maybe go down the hall and see how packed the food court is these days. Things change but I am sorry to see what has happened in this restaurant
Had wanted to try this restaurant for ages and finally got the chance to after they re-located at The Star (replacing Balla). I love the interior of the restaurant – it’s a great vibe for a date night or celebratory dinnerFor entrees we ordered Marinated tuna and BBQ southern calamari which were goodMains were what I found to be quite underwhelming. We had the John Dory and Murray CodDessert was the highlight of my experience here. The mango, coconut ice, pandan cream dessert sounded amazing so of course we ordered it. The flavours and texture were so delicious together and it was also really refreshing (however this is now off the menu). We also had the Valrhona chocolate which was averageStaff and service were amazing and overall a nice dining experience.
Flying Fish is super underrated in my opinion. I’ve always had amazing food and service and I’ve been back multiple times. My favourites would have to be the prawn sandwich. Which I’m glad they put officially onto the menu after it was a secret menu item. Weather you’re there for seafood or not all the dishes are amazing including the desserts.
