I always find Clovelly a little suburban to the home ‘hood, but that only makes A Man and His Monkey a perfect fit. There’s a sleepy, quiet and low key vibe, if you manage to visit without the nippers joining mum and dad for weekend breakfast. A tiny little shopfront on Clovelly road, it’s hard to find a park. There’s a cosy, homely feel from the warmth of the service and the eclectic mix of vintage and mostly timber furniture. What I love most, is that there is a middle eastern influence here, featuring heavily, my favourite Sydney breakfast food – shakshuka. There is something so deeply satisfying about rich, spicy hot tomatoes baked with eggs and any variation on the accompaniments. If you’ve had one or two good ones in this city, you’ll be familiar with the heartbreak for a half-attempt at making such a simple, easy and satisfying dish. This place is now the go-to. Forget Shenkin, their waits and their deep fried halloumi – I did mention the parking but the shakshuka here is insanely satisfying and not to mention, they have nailed the art of making a messy dish look divine. I try the Labnushka – Shakshuka with Labne. Its a beautiful bowl of red and eggs, with labne circling it in nearly a wave-like fashion, quite fitting for a cafe near the ocean, not? Its a generous serve so much-welcomed from those who usually pay extra for quality dairy goods yet often disappointed at the serve. Not here. Topped with greens, coriander and spices, Its not heavy, and honestly quite light. The coffee is strong and delicious and its far too easy to order another. crumbs-au.com
