Nice and CosyI visited this restaurant with my fianc for a casual dinner. I must admit that we were wanting to go elsewhere but we couldn’t find the restaurant in Randwick so this was the next best thing. BUT WE WERE very glad we stumbled into this amazing restaurant. One thing I like about this is that they have a small menu however they make sure that every single dish is cooked to their best ability. Every time the waiters were delivering food to other tables, I kept on changing my mind because it smelt spectacular.I ordered a rib eye – medium with mushroom sauce, mash and vege’s. It was cooked as per I requested. My partner ordered a seafood risotto and she was also happy with her meal.Service – the manager and the waiters were always prompt with excellent customer service. They were all happy to help you and easy to talk to.Food – it was delicious. Could not fault anything. Even our Garlic Bread Starter was one of the best I have had. Value – it is quite cheap for a location in Randwick. Good size portions.Atmosphere – everyone was happy and enjoying their meals. There were a few families there celebrating their birthday’s. Yes it is a small restaurant and it can get quite rowdy if people are celebrating their birthday however I rather this then a boring restaurant were everyone is just concentrating on eating…I would highly recommend this restaurant for your catch up, romantic dinners or family lunches. An Italian restaurant as a must visit.
FOOD TYPEItalianFOOD QUALITYFour of us dined on a busy Saturday evening in late June. We started with two shared entrees: the funghi gratinati – thats mushrooms filled with herbs, spices and cheese – and the baby calamari; and two shared salads: the basic seahorse and the caprese, which has tomatoes and bocconcini. For my main, I chose my fav, spag bol. My wife choose the the veal arabiata off the specials board, and our friends stayed with a seafood theme, choosing the Atlantic salmon and the fettuccine marinara. The salads were fairly simple, but neatly presented and with smooth dressing sauces that were subtle and not too overpowering. The baby calamari was fresh and succulent and the mushroom dish was a pleasant surprise: two large mushrooms, topped with melted cheese, herbs and spices. Portion sizes were smallish so we didnt fill up, which was just as well, because the main courses were tasty and delicious. My spag bol was perfectly cooked just the way I like it, with the spag soft and chewy, the meat flavoured with a hint of spice and soaked in a rich napoli sauce. My wifes veal was tender and flavoursome and our dining companions couldnt praise their food enough: the salmon especially was beautifully prepared with love, care and attention to detail: a decent piece of fish well cooked and accompanied by a selection of nutritious vegetables.ATMOSPHEREThis is a long established restaurant, thats clearly built up a solid reputation among the locals. We arrived at 7pm by which time there was already a fair crowd, but by 8pm there wasnt an empty seat in the place, which gave it an energetic and lively atmosphere. It retains a fairly relaxed and laid back ambience though. Decor, after so many years, is a tad dated with the 1990s style timber floors, wood and steel furniture, white walls with some photos featuring the local area, dotted around the place. Tables are neatly laid with crisp white napery and stainless steel cutlery, giving it a touch of elegance and class.SERVICEOur booked table was ready and waiting for us in a nice spot in the centre of the restaurant just behind the bar counter, but I couldnt help getting the feeling that the maitre d, a tall gent with a greying beard and glasses, was a tad jaded perhaps after so many years running this place. There was just a hint of impatience and irritation in his demeanour, as we dithered a bit before making our choices. The two ladies on duty though were polite and friendly, although service was patchy. One salad came out, followed about 10 minutes later by the other salad and the entrees. Then followed by a long and tedious wait for the mains of about half an hour; just a little bit too long for my liking. I guess one needs to make allowances for the fact that they were busy, although I have been to other restaurants that have been equally busy, but there was no long wait for the meals. Perhaps they need to increase the staff complement in the kitchen to speed up the throughput on weekends.COMFORTWe were quite comfortable at our table, which was large enough to easily fit all the dishes. And I have to give these guys credit, because, unlike so many other Syd restaurants, which simply fail to cater for our chilly winters, the temp inside Seahorse was pleasant and warm, creating a homely and cosy atmosphere. To quote from their own website: Beautifully warmed for these cold winter evenings and air conditioned for hot summer days. Thanks for that, guys!MENUThe menu is a smart looking document with plain sheets enclosed in plastic, and bound in an attractive leather cover. Its clearly laid out and simple to follow.TOILETSThere is one disabled toilet downstairs and separate male and female ones up a short flight of stairs. Theyre quite dated, but clean and well provisioned, although the 1980s style hand dryer in the gents is well passed its used by date and hand towels would be a lot quicker and easier.ACOUSTICSTables are well spaced out and most diners here are well behaved and quiet, so despite all the wood concrete and lack of carpets or any other kind of noise absorbers, we had no trouble conversing.COSTWith our Ent Book card (25% off up to a max of $30) we paid a reasonable $134 for four of us. That included corkage at $4 each, two salads, two entrees and four mains. No desserts or coffee. Thats pretty good value for an upmarket restaurant in a busy part of town.BOOKINGDefinitely recommended for weekend dining and to be safe probably best to book for weeknight dining as well.PARKING/ACCESSSeahorse is situated in the heart of The Spot, opposite the Ritz Cinema. Its always busy around here because, apart from the cinema, there are also numerous restaurants, cafes and coffee shops, making parking unfortunately a bit of a chore. We usually drive straight past, head along Perouse Road and turn into Howard Street, where you can usually find an unrestricted spot (scuse the pun).in the evenings.SUMMARYThe food was simply presented but fresh, tasty and with clearly only the best quality ingredients used. The ambience is lively and fun but without being overly rowdy or noisy, making for a pleasant and relaxed setting to enjoy a meal. Having dined here a few times before we knew what to expect and were not disappointed, except for the service which was too slow and we found the the maitre d a tad abrupt.
A lovely restaurant that is easy to miss at the Randwick Spot. It is located opposite the Randwick Ritz Picture theatre. The Seahorse is a surprise to be visited! Italian food at a very reasonable price. This restaurant has a great range of entrees, mains and deserts. On this occasion I had the Marinara because I love seafood. I asked to have Spaghetti instead of Fettuccine. This request was not an issue. I also asked for the Napoli sauce with a dash of cream. My meal was delicious with large pieces of fish, succulent scallops and prawns. I was very impressed with the portion size and taste. My partners dish was the Mushroom Funghi. It was also a good portrait size with large Mushroom pieces throughout the risotto. Dessert was sadly missed as I was too satisfied to eat anymore. Next time Tiramisu or the Vanilla baked Cheesecake will be on my list. I highly recommend coming here and I’m sure you won’t be disappointed!
A very disappointing evening. While the garlic and anchovy bread and the salad was a promising start, the pasta and seafood main courses were a stodgy flavourless lump as was the flathead fillets which were so small they looked like sardines. The service was abysmal – all the wait-staff were surly and appeared very stressed. We waited over an hour for the main courses and were almost ready to leave before they arrived. The bathroom cubicles were unlockable, the toilet leaked and had an old ice cream container holding stagnant water, the access panel was half hanging off and glass window louvres were broken. Not planning to return after a very forgettable experience!!
Had food here the other day with the fam as it was near the hospital where we were visiting. Found it quite good, had it not been for the linguine seahorse I received and ordered not containing a trace of a scallop anywhere despite my ordering it for the scallops that the menu stated it had. Apart from that they weren’t too stingy on the prawns like other places, though I think from the thinness of the sauce that there were no mashed up prawns there either. If it weren’t for the misleading menu description and my ordering the dish for the scallops, this place would’ve gotten a 4/5. Dish was otherwise pretty good, but not great! Service was nice though very slow, it was moderately busy on the Sunday and we waited roughly 35m for our meals (4 diners). My father also ordered a beer which did not come it’ll after the dishes came out, and only when he reminded the waiter that it was ordered, despite two waiters prior coming out to check on the drink he ordered.Mum ordered the vegetarian pizza which for $16 (one person) was quite reasonable as the pizza was really good!! My fathers veal dish was quite boring and the thin dry veal and clear looking sauce didn’t look not taste very appetising. My score of 3/5 is based on my experience with my dish alone and not my fathers experiences (which although were negative didn’t bother me too much). Would come here again though as I’ve been told the marinara was worth a try! Prices were reasonable for Italian food. Especially in the location it’s in.
This is the first review I have ever written as I have never felt the need, but I feel as though I have a social responsibility to warn people about Seahorse in Randwick.I came into the restaurant with naive optimism, but I was not prepared for this experience. The most positive thing I can say is that my girlfriend and I had a lot to talk about at the place next door after half-finishing our near inedible disasters. The first entre we shared was the lightly battered calamari. It was soggy, bland and I would be willing to stake my life that it was not at all fresh. Really disappointing. My main was the chicken fillet with pancetta, cheese, and pesto. Visually it was poor. Just oozing oil. The taste of it was obviously sickly. My girlfriend ordered the Wholemeal Linguini with Morton Bay Bugs. Just so bland. Literally tasted of plain pasta, olive oil and chilli. There were also random chunks of garlic scattered throughout. Perhaps the most disappointing aspect was that the bugs were just awful and did not at all taste fresh. The portion of bugs was also miniscule, which was really a blessing in disguise. The waitresses were lovely and polite, but seemed to be occasionally confused clearly indicating either a lack of management or bewilderment as to why anyone would eat their food. I felt sorry for the ladies who must feel embarrassed serving such poor quality food.My bill was $74 and in paying I felt like I had been mugged. Without a doubt the worst Italian food I have ever eaten.
Worst italian food in randwick. Really chefs from seafood italian restaurant? You guys thought it would be ok to serve powder mix mash potatoes? It tasted horrible and left a horrible taste in my mouth. And there is a thing called salt. And seasoning. Maybe you should have tried adding that to your pasta. Dry, tasteless and just painful to eat. Will never visit your restaurant again.
