Cafe Oratnek is a popular cafe in Redfern with good food and service. Pictured: Japanese linguine (that yolk porn!), pork fillet katsu sandwich and matcha latte.
Tried their famous sandwiches. The chicken katsu had great quality chicken and batter and Japanese flavours but it had a very thick piece of chicken and had been sliced horizontally across a roll, leaving three pieces that were very difficult to eat. The teriyaki chicken sandwich was perhaps better, thinner (and very tasty) chicken making it slightly easier to eat (still very messy due to avocado and egg) and with a good combination of ingredients, except that teriyaki did not seem to contribute very much at all to the overall flavour. Both had pretty standard bread but still good sandwiches.
Got the Ochazuka, which I thought was quite unusual (basically wet rice) and an interesting concept (pouring tea yourself into the rice). It tasted a bit bland, but after adding some salt and pepper, it tasted much better. The portion size was also a bit disappointing but worth trying if you haven’t before. We also got a matcha cake, but we thought there was too much matcha powder on the cake for our liking but the cake itself tasted really good! The cafe gets quite packed around 12pm (we had to wait approx 20mins) and there was still a line when we left (around 2pm) so prepare yourself for a wait!
After a very long queue, I had this egg rice which was a very large portion and yummy! While this place has a weird queuing system. Very unclear about whether should get a ticket first or just queue for a table. The dog friendly option is a magnet to me. Friendly staff and prompt service.
Loved the okonomiyaki. Was so flavorful. The omrice was really good too. The fried rice inside was done so well. The chips were crunchy but soft on the inside. The portions were really large and reasonably price. Would definitely recommend!
Cafe Oratnek was so good and flavourful, I love asian fusion and this cafe did deliver! It exceeded my expectations greatly.. good atmosphere but can get busy on a Sunday. We made it just before closing time and it was still quite busy, not a major issue.
I really enjoyed Cafe Oratnek! Friendly service and great location. Eating area is quite small but cosy feel to it. Highlight was the matcha tiramisu which I highly recommend. Omi rice was second favourite and then the shakshuka. The downside I felt was the matcha thick shake that was lacking in thickness and flavour. It tasted more milk with a hint of matcha. Overall I would love to visit these guys again to try their matcha french toast and breakfast burger!
