When the sun came out we just had to get out of the house. Found ourselves walking around Rose Bay foreshore and trying to dodge all the dogs there when we felt like trying the pub for a lunch feed. It was a Sunday so it was $15 burgers all day. I had the grilled chicken burger which was fresh and standard for pub fare. A big portion and side of chips was worth the $15. I paired it up with the sweet potato salad – delicious. Probably a little expensive at $16 but it was very tasty. The other burger was the vego mushroom option which was good as well. A nice space with plenty of natural light and a positive vibe. Worth heading in Monday to Thursday and Sunday for their $15 meal specials.
FOOD TYPEModern AustralianFOOD QUALITYWe lobbed in here for the Thurs Pasta Night and couldnt have been happier with our meals. I choose the spaghetti bolognese for the modest price of $15 and my wife had the Vitality Salad with grilled haloumi. My spag bol was expertly prepared. The pasta was just the right balance between melt-in-your-mouth softness and al dente chewiness and the meat was tender, flavoursome and tasty. And mixed into that were generous slices of shaved cheese to give it a sharp, bity texture. My wifes Vitality Salad had quinoa, feta, spinach, tomatoes, and salsa and was topped with crunchy roasted seeds. It was a refreshing and nutritious choice and the chef obligingly added her haloumi dish to the salad, to give that extra zing and character. Portion sizes were average, perhaps a tad on the small side, but I guess thats testimony to the quality of the food because I could easily have had another plate!ATMOSPHEREThe 1980s style dcor, is quaint and rather old-worldly, with honey coloured wooden floors, wooden bar fittings, clean white finishes and red and cheque upholstered chairs. Sure, its a tad dated but I guess thats part of its charm and it works well to create a warm and homely atmosphere. Its the kind of place where you feel comfortable and relaxed in. Perhaps a little too comfy for some, who brought their little kids along, which detracted somewhat from the overall vibe.SERVICEBoth bar and wait staff were friendly, helpful and polite. Orders are placed at the counter and our dishes were quickly delivered to our table by a pretty waitress, neatly attired in a black and white outfit. COMFORTTables are large enough to allow you to spread out and they are easily able to accommodate all the dishes and the drinks as well. Despite it being a winters eve, we were not cold at all.MENUNo problems following this one in the bright light. Its clearly laid out and theres also a larger version behind the bar counter.TOILETSLarge, clean, well provisioned and easy to find.ACOUSTICSThe night we dined, there was a smattering of other guests, so it was perhaps half full. Now thats just right to create enough atmosphere so that you dont feel like youre in a cold, soulless environment, but not so full as to make it crowded and noisy. The bar area next door – separated from the bistro only by a glass partition also presented no problem, although I have been here before when the noise from that part of the joint has been pretty loud. COSTWe paid a modest $40 for the two dishes. Cant complain about that. Bar prices are reasonable too.BOOKINGNot necessaryPARKING/ACCESSEasy parking in Dover Rd.SUMMARYThis is rapidly becoming our favourite local haunt for a casual, cheap but satisfying weeknight meal from the specials selection. My only complaint is that its a tad too family-friendly for my liking. We arrived at 6.00pm by which time, kiddie-hour was in full swing, so maybe try getting there after 7.30pm for a more relaxed eve when the little blighters have gone off to bed.
Small portions, overpriced beer, surly staff. Having been a local in Rose Bay for a number of years, I have watched pub go down hill to a point now where it is a very poor experience. If you can go elsewhere you should. My oberservations are basd on personal experience, general chat amongst the (aging) regulars. here they are:1. Surly staff, who have little food or wet sales experience. For the most part they lack the character to e working in a pub environment and are very young. Essentially children serving adults alcohol2. Miserable decor…treated pine throughout. Uncomforatbale tables and seating3. Small portions of main courses. The spaghetti is a good example of a starter size being touted as a main. The staff serve meals with their thumbs on the plates. The kitchen staff pop out for a smoke and then go straight back to work. Not always washing their hands4. Terrible music policy. The same tape plays over and over.5. No respect for their core customers. ie: the locals6. Staff often just hanging about chatting when customers are waiting to served7. I have seen the chef coming back from IGA with ‘economy’ white bread to use for the steak sandwiches….cheap ingredients and top prices8. The beers are now $6+ for a schooner…the Sheaf is almost $2 cheaper in the afternoon7. Very limited menu. Everything comes with chips. The schnitzel is a joke !8. Tables not cleared and cleaned on a regular basis.9. Even some of the staff admit that th epub is crap and it is boring working there10. Aging customers that do not like new faces
Worst steak Eva, over cooked more than once. Never eat there again
Set your clock by the train…. Good pub style food-and good, inexpensive soft drinks, beer and spirits. Dropped in to this pub for a cheap pub-grub kind a feed at lunch. I had a Thai duck salad, and my my mate ordered a solid T-bone, chips and salad. Both well presented – about $18 each. Just like a Swiss or London tube train, on the hour, every hour, a model train set goes around the inside perimeter of the pub dining room. Set your watch to its departure. Looks like it would make Gomez Adams jealous. Nice and cute touch.
