On a family trip to Berry, we arrived on Tuesday. It so happens that most restaurants were either closed on Tuesday or closed early for the day. We opted for this place which was not too far from where we stayed. It was a nice place for casual, self-service dining. Menu was limited. Food was okay, which was quite typical of pub food. The place offered daily specials aside from the regular menu. Nothing much to complain about. Likewise, there was nothing really impressive.
I was a bit apprehensive after reading the sparse reviews on here, and the slightly dodgy first appearance as you walk into the ‘family bistro’ which is a large dark undecorated room with some patio furniture.Ordered 2x sirloin steak. One blue, one medium. Took about 40 minutes to come out. We were waiting for it buzzer to go off but it didn’t. In the end the cook brought the food out to us! However the wait was worth it, and all apprehension unnecessary, once I took a bite of the steak. My steak (medium) was cooked perfectly with a delicious char. My wife’s blue streak was slightly over cooked, but that is understandable! One of the tastiest steaks I’ve had in a while. The large chips that came with the steak were crispy even as the meal ended.In the end we were pleasantly surprised.

It all started out ok, we got a table, we got drinks, and we ordered our food with an expectation of good, charming pub food to match the charming nature of the town. An hour later I got up to see where our order was to find out that our little buzzer had actually run out of batteries, another 15 minutes after I enquired about our order it finally arrived. My piece of leather, which was meant to be Spanish mackerel, was a little dry and chewie #where’smylemonwedge! My partner ordered (FROM THE MAINS LIST) an eggplant tomato and feta dish which at best should have been a canepe! The only saving grace was nicely charred asparagus and a nice crispy schooner, albeit of tooheys new. Sorry great southern hotel but I now know why the line at the doughnut shop is so long. Work to do.
Apparently this pub changed hands 5 weeks ago, well, it has to be said that we lucked it by finding this place in the early days! Great service, great wine list, amazing food – we had the slow cooked lamb and wagu beef, just heavenly melt in the mouth deliciousness- good luck for the future, and keep up the good work!
