This is not the place to drop in for a typical pub meal, the food on offer is much better than that. The prices are high for a pub ($28ish for mains) but I would argue that with food of this quality it is well worth it.I ordered beef cheek that was slow cooked in a Vietnamese flavoured broth served over sweet potato mash. The meal was huge, I struggled to get through half of it but really wanted to keep eating. My partner ordered their laksa which was heavenly scented and spicy and served with fresh lime. We found the staff very attentive within the bistro – checking to make sure we were happy. I didn’t have room for dessert, but the offerings included sticky date pudding, waffles with caramelised banana and strawberry pie (?tart), with lots of gluten free offerings on the menu for those who need it. I realise they have had some terrible reviews, maybe they have decided to lift the service, we certainly had no complaints and will come again.
Perhaps we stumbled into a themed joke pub where the staff insult you and serve you terrible food? No, the inaptly named The Friendly Inn at Kangaroo Valley takes 45 minutes to fill an order of pizza, hamburger and a salad and then the staff insult you, laugh at you and give you the finger when you dare ask a question about how long it will be before you’ll get served. The service is beyond awful – I think execrable sums it up and that goes for the food as well.
The Friendly Inn was not a memorable meal, in saying that, I wasn’t expecting much, I never do when it’s a basic pub meal. The Inn didn’t really seem overly friendly and the prices were quite the opposite of what the name of the pub implies. The meals weren’t overly large and the Guinness steak definitely was not cooked how I asked, on top of that, the vegetables were definitely not cooked for long enough. My last issue was the price of the drinks, you should never have to pay almost 20 for two schooners.
Good pub vibe, good pub food, good value. Lovely location with amazing views. Nice selection of beers on tap. Great to see fresh veggies being used from the nearby community garden.
New head chef! Thank god…the food has improved a lot. Had barramundi with prawns & salsa (bit apprehensive at $34!) and it was a beautiful piece of fish with three good sized prawns. Hubby had a piece of rump soaked in Guinness and herbs which was lovely, plenty of chunky chips. Passionfruit cheesecake was a nice finish! Definitely an improvement and would come again.
Outrageous prices!. Called in today for lunch and paid $6.10 for a stubbie of XXXX Gold. Absolutely ridiculous, Kangaroo Valley is far from being remote with Nowra only abut 25 minutes away. No reason for their prices. Won’t go back.
Not value for money. A pork chop the same size as a lamb cutlet, given chips instead of veg and the price was over the top. Not again! Nice pub and atmosphere, pity the meals didn’t reflect that
