Although The Salisbury has recently undergone some impressive structural renovations, it doesn’t appear their management have decided to reinforce the calibre of their kitchen output during the same process.Considering Sydney’s ultra competitive pub food landscape The Salisbury is walking a fine line on some extremely critical levels. The main being that if you’re going to charge $32 for a steak and chips, it better be a hell of lot better than the other local mainstays who are charging exactly $10 less per dish for what is a superior product. Which makes you wonder, have The Salisbury jacked up the prices purely to sustain their renovation bills? As mentioned we had the Scotch fillet with salad and chips ($32) which although wasn’t terrible, it just was in no way up to scratch for what was being asked. We also had the Pot of mussels in a white wine and tamarind tomato sugo, sweet fried garlic and sourdough ($25), which sounded great on paper, however presented itself as being nothing more than a heated up supermarket Passata with some fairly average mussels, a fair amount of which had not even opened. For this venue to succeed it needs to be more savvy as to the target market it intends to appeal to. Having such high prices for what is fundamentally a pub meal is not going to be sustainable for the family friendly demographic in Stanmore, and that was no more apparent upon noticing the place wasn’t even a quarter full at 7:30pm on a Friday night.Another observation was that although the venue has now been given a complete face lift, it still seems to be a place where older more loyal locals are still content to stand with a schooner or pot, boisterously playing some pool, catching some sport on the TV whilst heading into the adjoining TAB for a flutter every so often in between having a ciggy out the front. This is absolutely not an issue, however seems oddly juxtaposed with the environment they are quite obviously wanting to create. It would be fair to assume management are wanting their newly spruced up venue to be taken seriously, however, it was the kitchen that once again had let them down, none more so than when some of their cook staff were observed standing at their kitchen door slapping each other in the back side with rolled up dish towels. This is perhaps a minor detail, however it really does give you an idea of how much attention and or respect that is going into what’s getting sent out on the plate.Quite simply, The Salisbury’s decision to want to be considered as a viable meeting place for local Sydney foodies needs to be backed up by what comes out of their kitchen. Hopefully they are able to get a head chef into the kitchen who is more focused and in line with their overall vision, before a time when the crowds and their loyal locals have decided to go elsewhere.

I have never been more mistreated as a paying customer than I was at the Salisbury Hotel. Never again. I didn’t know that my dog wasn’t allowed here as dogs used to be. I had him slightly inside this establishment in the completely empty back smoking area just slightly inside the gate. He was sleeping on the ground and so relaxed and then out of nowhere this abhorrent staff member started yelling at us ‘you are not welcome here’ and saying that the totally placid dog could not be there. She seemed unhinged. I was apologetic, and left my beer and took my dog outside, yet she continued to assault us saying all sorts of horrible things about me as a person. It was entirely unwarranted. Horrific experience. I am still in shock that a human could treat another person in that manner. Horrible place. Do not recommend.

Great pub located in Stanmore offering good honest pub food without the city prices. The dishes are delicious and is a great space to hang out with your friends. Street parking is easy. I highly recommend the fried chicken burger and the crispy squid.

Update: September 2017The renovations looks complete with a great new airy space, kids club/area inside & a vintage brew truck in the beer garden! It’s quirky yet fits in perfectly with the new space with exposed timber, recycled bricks & steel framed doors. Love it! There is also a kids club on Mondays & Fridays and the truck will keep kids young and old occupied. Love the updated menu also, which all sound delicious with a mix of traditional pub fare & new, fusion dishes. The Sunday Feast is delicious & generous, and brings back the tradition of gathering with family friends on a Sunday for a long lunch. Laze around for a great meal and drinks, especially boutique beers. Such a lovely revival of a local institution with a great community vibe. This local is undergoing a revamp lately. Gone are the dated carpets & furniture, in comes a hip, slightly grungy, very airy & spacious new space. The new bistro is focused on fresh produce & fod portion is generous, good quality, tasty & fantastic value. Can never go wrong with crispy squid or haloumi to start, perfect with a few drinks. A MUST HAVE is the pickle chips, the perfect snack with one of many craft beers & ciders they have available. Who knew something that sounds so ordinary can be so extraordinarily AMAZING?!? Then there is the crispy chicken wings with a crunchy coating, super juicy & tender meat, a light sprinkle of coconut & that spicy dipping sauce. Omg… And who doesn’t love a good burger or schnitzel? The burgers have classic flavours & cooked well & I enjoyed the schnitzel even more with a crispy coating & still juicy & tender meat within. The chicken burger had a super crispy coating, great flavours & very generous piece of juicely chicken. Perfect with that slaw inside. The Shepherd’s pie is well balanced, with lots of vegetables, a delicious golden potato crust scattered with salty feta & the perfect comfort food. You might be too full for dessert but both the crunchy cookie waffles & warm chocolate brownie are hits so indulge, especially at this price! This is a hidden local gem, perfect for a casual lunch or dinner with family or friends, even for those with young children.

They have refurbished this joint and kicked out all the crusty old reprobates that used to congregate in the front bar. The fare out the back is the same standard pub grubas it was pre-refurb. Nothing to write home about.

This place is Great!!. Since the Salisbury found Spiro the Greek Chef, I’ve managed to half my Woolworths home food shopping bill! This is the logic I use to my wife to justify eating here 2-3 times a week with which she dare not argue, as she uses the same logic to me every time she buys clothes in a sale. The menu ranges from light meals to share like Spanakopita with a side of olives, to more substantial fare such as Chicken or Beef mains. During the 3-4 months Spiro has been resident, the Salisbury has changed from a quiet local to a buzzing thriving restaurant and it is all about the food.Service is excellent and quick, meals are reasonably priced – expect to pay $13-$20 for a main, and the food is really tasty. The menu is strongly Greek themed, but there is plenty to satisfy the traditional Australian palette and there are several good vegetarian options.Highly recommended
