Started upstairs in the bar with a Gin and tonic. They have some fantastic choices, I went with a local one from Tassie and was not disappointed. The space up there is really relaxing, cosy and quiet.Pate was perfectly smooth but a little too strong in flavour for my liking. The highlight here tonight was definitely the Jerusalem artichokes- they were amazing, make sure you get this. The Beef short rib and Lamb shoulder were our mains. Both were ok, but was expecting a lot more flavour though, a little bland.Service was friendly with very good wine recommendations.

Set in a old post office conversion, One Penny Red offers some of the best modern Australian fare weve eaten in Sydney. After arriving 10 mins early for our table, we were whisked upstairs to Vernons Bar, a stand alone bar offering a huge selection of gins, wines, unusual craft beers, cocktails and a variation on the downstairs menu. We grabbed a few cocktails and before too long our table was ready and we were shown downstairs. It was so refreshing to be sat in a dining room of a restaurant and not be elbow to elbow with other diners! With ample breathing space and no fear of having an eye taken out by another guests handbag, we perused the reasonably priced seasonal menu and were told the specials by our very personable and friendly waiter. We opted for both specials; a barramundi (from our waiters uncles farm!) in a crab and shiso broth with pippies, kipfler potatoes and cavolo nero, along with a fried brussels sprout salad with smoked beef fat. We went on to order the chickpea fritter with king brown mushroom, raw zucchini and pesto (a must!), a sirloin steak with caramelised Spanish onion and their famous crunchy roasted sea salt potatoes. All dishes came out from lightest to heaviest and with the ultimate timing between each course (important for digestion for folks like us who order everything!). The food was outrageously tasty, fresh, lovingly prepared and uncomplicated. You could taste each individual component and genuinely appreciate the produce. We were also delighted at the potion sizes! After leisurely stuffing our faces and thoroughly enjoying the experience, we didnt think twice when offered the dessert menu. The peanut butter and jelly ice cream sandwich would delight and treat anyones childhood nostalgia and the banana beignets were so light and fluffy. I could absolutely eat a bag of them!Staff were wonderful, attentive and professional throughout the evening, all the while being relaxed and relatable. We will definitely be back to not only dine in the restaurant but also up in Vernons Bar. Thank you One Penny Red!
