Wonder why this place is a 3.1. Definitely loved it. Everything we ordered was so so good and authentic. That’s real Japanese cooking. Atmosphere was nice as well. We ordered sashimi, beef tongue, pipi and udon.Sashimi was fresh and high quality. Perfect thickness to get the rich texture. Beef tongue was well seasoned and tender.Pipi was surprisingly sweet and tender as well and the soup was so spot on!I didn’t taste the udon noodle but the tempura was cooked to perfect.

Service was excellent and feels like a pleasant family-run restaurant. From the moment our order was placed, the team in the kitchen cheerfully cooked away and we couldnt fault any of the dishes that we had ordered; certainly a testament to the food quality. Konakara will undoubtedly be a regular!
A quaint little place, we were seated with enthusiasm. Their menu isn’t extensive but you have more than enough to choose from. We were impressed with the presentation and freshness of the sashimi. I also enjoyed the wagyu with sesame ponzu (went very well with the onion). Everything else was decent but had its drawbacks. The kingfish was flavoursome but was a bit overcooked for my liking so it was a little dry. The salmon tar tar don didn’t have much flavour at all. With that being said, the service was attentive and friendly and it’s a fairly new restaurant so I’d give it another go but it is a bit out of the way.
Konakara is a small restaurant with a pleasant vibe and definitely a place to take your date for an intimate night out. The food was simple, delicious, and authentic with very fresh salmon in the salmon tataki we had. Portion sizes were on the smaller side, especially for a big eater, but generally decent in comparison to other restaurants. Service was friendly and efficient. Will definitely be back.
A new open Japanese restaurant in Surry Hills, with simple, bright and open-out design. There are no sushi on the menu instead it offers a different kind of Japanese food with authentic taste. Each dish highlights our dinner with its own unique flavour. We will definitely go back again to try for others. The restaurant is BYO at the moment while they await for their liquor license.
