A small sushi train restaurant located on the Cleveland end of Crown Street, Surry Hills, Tara Sushi Bar was a quick pit stop for a plate of tuna sushi rolls and edamame beans. Our interest was piqued by the chef torching the brle so we had an unexpected dessert of creme brle as well ($5.50). There wasnt the widest range of choices on the Sunday afternoon we visited but it served its purpose for what we were after.
The food was pretty decent despite the poor ratings. They give a very generous serving of agedashi tofu and it was nice and crispy. The sushi was alright, wasnt very tightly rolled so it fell apart once it was picked up. The sashimi didnt taste very fresh either…
We booked this restaurant through Dimmi as they were offering 50% off the food bill. We have dined at many other restaurants through Dimmi with 50% off (as we love trying new places) and they have all been great experiences. Staff advised that everything on the menu was 50% off, except drinks and items on the sushi train. This was repeated twice because my partner was in the bathroom the first time. We ordered two ramens and a few small dishes. The ramen was really bland, the soup was very watery and the noodles were mushy. The sashimi portions were the smallest Ive ever seen at a sushi store, so Im assuming they halved the portions because they were aware we had a 50% off deal. When we went to pay, we were informed that the ramens were full price even though they initially told us that everything on the menu was 50% off. I attempted to question this, but it wasnt going anywhere so I just paid and left. So instead of having 50% off, it worked out to only be 25% off. I wouldnt mind this at all if they were upfront about it at the beginning, and if the food was good. But the food was terrible and the portion sizes were a joke – plus I dont think many people like being lied to. Absolutely will not be returning to his restaurant.
