Westfield Sydney has finally opened its Rooftop (on level 7), becoming home to modern Cantonese restaurant, Duck & Rice and Turkish restaurant, Babylon. Duck & Rice pays homage to Shanghai and Hong Kong in the 20’s and 30’s with an opulent fit out featuring marble, leather, brass and rich wallpaper along with Chinese artifacts.  The large space, which seats 500 people, is adorned with 250 Chinese lanterns and the art deco styling creates a moody atmosphere.  The fit out includes a bar, restaurant and an outdoor terrace.

Service and the venue are gorgeous especially the rooftop area. But the taste of the food only deserves a pass. Assorted steamed dumplings, bug meat sui mai is the only highlight. Dough of the dumplings lacks the smooth texture. The mushroom in wild mushroom dumpling tastes like dried grass Pecking duck is average and again steamed wraps are dry and coarse. Wouldn’t come to Duck & Rice again unless the quality of the food is improved and worth the $$$$.

We came to try this new restaurant as we both work in the city so this was perfect for a Friday night dinner. Love the ambience and Art Deco vibes when we first walked in. The decor is amazing and we were super excited even before we sat down. We had some cocktails to set the mood and went about ordering our food. Sadly, the evening went slightly pear-shaped from there. The food did not quite live up to the expectations we had built up when we first walked in. The place screams out for exceptional food overseen by a Michelin-level chef. But it was sadly ordinary. The dumplings were lumpy and too chewy. The Peking duck pancakes were ok but nothing extraordinary. The XO sauce fried rice was a bit too spicy for my liking. The one stand-out was the Kurobuta Pork Belly which was beautifully tender and married perfectly with the apple kimchi on the side. Overall, worth a try, if only to enjoy the atmosphere.

Rates 3.25/5. Nice ambience, service was a bit lacking and slow. Mapo tofu 3.75/5, quite a generous portion unlike the rest of our dishes. Not quite grandma style as you would normally find at chinese outlets in chinatown. Packs a bit of heat, fried tofu was exquisitely delicate. Siu yuk kurobuta pork belly 3.5/5, for fans of pork crackling, this wont disappoint (much). We wanted steamed whole fish but they were not available. So steamed dory it was 3.5/5, topped with heaps of lovely ginger and chives, our only complaint was the small portion size. Peking duck 2.75/5, again small portion rice and ducky came out at room temp. At $50 for half a wee small duck, a bit steep in price. Fried ice cream looked good but didnt get to taste as our monsters demolished it.
