Does every major city have a Chinese inspired speakeasy type of cocktail bar thats so over-the-top its somewhere in between obnoxious, funky, and tacky? Really reminds me of Londons Opium and Chicagos Blind Dragon. Overall quite overpriced – drinks are great, food is very average, but experience was fun.
Walking down some discreet steps near Wynyard station, we pushed through a beaded curtain into a dimly lit hidden bar. The atmosphere was lively and slightly mysterious in a dark red setting, with a mix of chairs and couches hidden away in nooks and crannies.TRY THE DUMPLINGS! We had two steamers of Prawn Dumplings (5 for $10) and one Five Spiced Pork steamer (5 for $10) and these were soft and tasty and for some reason absolutely delicious! Would recommend. The cocktail menu was quite interesting and looked pretty original. We tried the Moshi Moshi which is a sweet midori-based cocktail that comes with popping boba (popping juice balls) in a classic bubble tea drink cup (YARM) and also had the Kuruta Kicker which was whisky based.Head down to Uncle Mings if youre looking for a cool bar with an imperial vibe!
