Upon hearing great things about Werri Beach Fish Shop, we were excited to try it out. The fish was fresh, the chips were slightly stale, and service was disappointing. Upon collecting our orders we kindly asked, what seemed to be the owner, whether he put chicken salt on our chips. He sarcastically replied with ‘well did you ask for it?’, while the girls at the back looked at us. We said no as we weren’t asked about it when we made our order. So we, again, kindly asked him if he could give us some. At this point, he seemed pretty annoyed over our minor request. He responded with a sigh and an eye roll, and proceeded to shake the chicken salt into a lunch bag. I mean, was that really difficult? Was he just being ‘Werri’ racist? As it is a town that is made up ofmainly Caucasians and we were a little Asian family visiting from the south-west of Sydney. Putting poorly executed jokes and racism aside, no customer should ever be met with a ‘sigh and an eye roll’ just because they’re asking for chicken salt to be put into a bag.
