I always feel bad for this place because it seems they just get zero business, and to be honest, the fact that there is no one there has put me off from dining here before. But with my first choice of vegan yum cha out the window, we popped by to Eastern Mansion just across the road.Once again there was no one there and it’s so dark inside it’s pretty easy to think they are closed. However, the doors opened and we were greeted by a young girl when we walked inside.Ordered the chilli clear noodles as an entree, salt & pepper squid, and an eggplant dish. Enjoyed them all! Quite immensely too, at the beginning. But as with most Chinese food, I found it really oily and heavy so after a while it gets too much, but at the start it was delicious! First time trying the clear noodles, and now I am keen to try them as much as possible whenever I see it on the menu. The other two dishes were really tasty too, very well seasoned, but just really oily. And the portions are HUUUUGE! My kind of place. Seriously though, they could do with more customers and are quite deserving imo. Everything priced well, generous portions, tasty food. Cut the oil a little and I could probably eat a whole lot more. Worth checking out. Try and not be put off by the darkness and emptiness because it was a lot better than I had expected!
I was recommended to try this place as I mentioned to a friend that I liked Chinese baked fish. It’s not situated in the best spot, and it’s easy to accidentally walk right past it without even realizing. The decor inside is very typical Chinese restaurant type, and everything is quite neat and tidy and clean. We went as a party of four, and we ordered their whole fish with assorted sides in hot chilli oil, Chinese style BBQ duck, stir-fried cauliflower, an eggplant dish, and a Chinese style fried rice. Prior to coming, I was told that this place catered for a slightly Sichuan taste and I was worried I’d find their dishes too chilli but everything was actually okay. It had just the right amount of chilli and flavour, without being overpowering or numbing, and everything was delicious. The duck was crispy on the outside while remaining tender and moist inside; there was also some pepper mix on the side of the plate for you to dip your duck in if you wanted more flavour, but I found I didn’t need to use it. The cauliflower was nicely seasoned, and kept hot by a small candle underneath the bowl. The fried rice wasn’t too spectacular though, and I admit, I was slightly let down by it, especially as most Chinese restaurants are great with their fried rices. Their fried rice was a little too wet and not crispy/fried enough in my opinion, and it didn’t have that wok-fried taste which is what makes fried rice great. I didn’t have the eggplant myself but my friends who did said it was okay, nothing amazing though, but very flavourful. The baked fish was what I came for though, and it was quite good. It came with an assortment of other things like vegetables and meat and squid and tripe (I don’t eat tripe though), and it’s placed on top of a portable stove so it boils and bubbles away and remains hot throughout the entire meal. There were a lot of large chillies and a very vibrant red chilli oil in the soup, so I was very worried I wouldn’t be able to handle the spice, but surprisingly, it was the perfect amount of chilliness. The fish itself was very tender, and it seemed like they had maybe flash fried the outside of the fish first, as the skin was a bit cripsy.Service was very attentive too, the lady who served us always kept an eye on us to make sure she is as there when we needed something. Our meal was quite cheap too, our total bill came to $119, for the food as well as drinks for all four of us. Overall, nothing overly amazing, but definitely not bad either.TIP: Dip the fish flesh in the soup for extra flavour, and also, there are small peppercorns in the soup..which I discovered by accident are actually the numbing pepper you get in Sichuan food and half my tongue was super numb for a while.(NB: I forgot to take a picture of the duck until we’d eaten half it already, and I completely forgot to take pictures of both the eggplant and the fried rice..) knifeforknchopsticks.com
Should have known better when I walked into the restaurant at around 8pm on a Saturday night and it was totally empty!! The food was rubbish! Ordered the beef and black bean and it smelt like armpit
Sichuan restaurant hidden in middle of nowhere. Awesome variety, fish was amazing. Great service and decor – under new management. Salad was quite refreshing, wontons deliciously spicy
