Disappointing. Unfortunately, as Wolli Creek or possibly the area’s only Japanese/’Japanese’ restaurant, Sushi Point was anything but ‘en pointe,’ regarding food, value and service. The only thing that might have redeemed the place was its indescribable ambience, with kitschy Japanese decorations among the hub-bub of Wolli Creek’s recently developed city centre.Japanese food is known for the attention to detail in preparing food in all stages, including prior to cooking and in its origins from farm or sea to kitchen table to dining table. When asked about the providence of the seafood, we were told that it was delivered daily to the restaurant and that it was fresh. Clearly, upon tasting the food, the texture and tartness of the seafood suggested there was some fishy business about regarding the supposed freshness. (Hey, but you can have fish delivered daily nevertheless, eh?)As for other, safer things if fish-borne parasites or potential implications of decaying fish are a concern, the texture and mouth-feel of the sushi rice was similar to that you could get in the Land of the Rising Sun. However, there has clearly been overzealous seasoning of the rice and the subtlety has been overwhelmed by sweet notes. Meats were cooked all right, but our sample size is limited by being rather small too.In terms of value, disappointingly, a lot of the sushi were cheap, low-yield ones, including seafood stick. The understated, small sushi are cute; and, sushi shouldn’t be enormous anyway. Nevertheless, the actual sushi with fish were marred by the quality of the fish and the dearth of guilty-pleasure inari serves.Further, it was a real shame that there wasn’t much in the way of ginger portions (which should have been smaller anyway; then again, you go to eat fish, rather than soy sauce, wasabi and ginger) or, considering they do have Korean dishes and are clearly a Korean restaurant, with Korean management and Korean dishes, those side-dishes (banchan). Finally, with some of the dishes we saw other patrons have, Sushi Point seems to do an unfortunate replica of run-of-the-mill stuff you could do and make at home for perhaps a tenth of the cost (e.g., ramen). On service, hard to say that there was really any. There could’ve also been some communication issues when there were waitstaff, but it is a two-way street, we suppose. Nevertheless, there was a lovely Japanese lady but another waitress from continental Southeast Asia? was somewhat unfriendly/not warm, unhelpful and unreliable (or the kitchen staff are dishonest).Would we recommend going here or would we go here again? Maybe yes to the former if you are in the area and have munchies for Japanese or Korean, but definitely a pass for a repeat visit if the place does not pick up its act.
$12.00 for instant noodle and no service, katsu pork over cooked and tempura from freezer…….I know you need to make money, but guys, please keep it simple and nice and people will come back for more!
Read the reviews, but had no choice as it was the only thing we didn’t disagree on eating. Food was surprisingly good. I can’t recommend the volcano roll enough. We had a few people but chose not to order the ramen from other reviews. What we did order was tasty and different to other Japanese restaurants for the same price. They sold different japanese beers and soju(?). The peach Soju was tasty but i think it should be shared with 2 other people at least (strong).Staff were super nice and friendly.Nice and warm inside, i’ll go again as it gets colder outside.
