They just have endless problems here with the carpet getting smelly from all the beer and other fluids – they used to change it every few years and it’s clearly overdue for a change now. Otherwise, it’s an interesting pub with locals and theatre-goers, always guaranteed to meet someone. There are just a few tables outside, the smelly crowded main bar and then a nice area near the bistro. The food was fancy pub food with some decent vegetarian options as well as juicy schnitzels with a herb crust and pureed veges. I fondly remember the budget Asian food they used to do but the current fancy pub food is probably their best yet.

Came here on a Friday to farewell a colleague from work, and had lunch with the work team. It was Friday Pie Day, apparently something they had recently started doing. The deal was pretty good in price for a pie and a drink. The pie came out quick, it was hot, it was big (I’m not the kind to snap my food before I eat it, I just want to eat it!) The pie for that Friday was a chicken and leek pie with bacon, on top of onion mash. It sounded great, it came out and it look great. The pie was deep, and a good diameter in size. The mash below it looked like a single scoop, and there was some kind of red wine jus also. Cracking open the pie, the top pasty was pretty flaky and a lot of hot pie steam came out, hmm great. Digging in, the flavours were well blended, but it was heavily salted, not so much that it ruined the pie, but certainly could have done with less seasoning. I do wonder if the pie filling had been seasoned without taking into account the salt content of the bacon, and that had leached out during the cooking.I didn’t give a 5/5 because its near impossible to have perfection. But, it was definitely a good feed, a good deal but I couldn’t take advantage of the drink option fully because of it being a work lunch, so it was a slight waste to have a non-alcoholic drink using the token instead, which was another negative in that scheme of things. That said, I would definitely go back for another Friday Pieday if they were just as good!

Stopped by here for a late night dessert. The name of the restaurant is Jimmy Fitz Kitchen. The actual dining area at the rear of the hotel after you pass the bar. Order and make payment at the tiny opening that is the kitchen. The Bilpin Apple & Pear Crumble had been chosen. It took them quite a while to bring this out and unfortunately was not worth the wait. The apples were left in large chunks and whilst had a decent flavour, it wasn’t as pleasant as it could’ve been. Ice cream was just a store bought variety by the taste of it. It isn’t a place you would actively seek out considering what they were charging.

I really enjoyed the Old Fitz. I came here on a Sat night with some friends and we sat outside for dinner. The staff were really friendly. I had the Halloumi Salad which was so tasty and yam fries. I saw the chef cutting them up fresh in the kitchen and you could tell the difference, they were beautiful!

The laksa’s have gone. This place has gone totally down hill. Very limited Chinese menu on paper plates and wooden forks. Time to find a new place.
