It is great to see venues like this supporting apprentice chefs. However you simply cannot put an apprentice on to cook poached eggs when they don’t know how to cook a poached egg in the first place. That’s not the responsibility of the apprentice. The head chef is not supporting his apprentice appropriately if you either give him a job he doesn’t know what to do in or he’s been taught but not yet competent in and not given feedback. Today we waited while our first round of poached eggs sat in the water for 10 minutes while the apprentice got distracted by other things. Then when we asked for them to be redone this time for a soft poach they were cooked correctly but served in a dish full of water. Please for the sake of a positive experience for your staff and patrons, do better with your apprentice. He and we deserve better. Similarly the night prior we attended a send off with two tables of patrons. Had a buffet @$55/ head. It is not hard to put out a decent quality of food. There was literally every meat, overcooked and the only accompaniment was a bowl full of potatoes, bread rolls, pasta salad and a terrible side salad. None of it pleasant to eat. Pasta salad was macaroni with disproportionately large pieces of hard (as in fresh) pineapple. Prawns were ok. Dessert fruit platter, Pavlova and cheesecake were good but again the Christmas pudding poor. No happy hour at the bar. The bar and wait staff are good, but overall the whole experience as a customer is really poor. I’d be happy to pay more elsewhere for a better experience. I don’t think it would be difficult to lift the experience, but you have to care in the first place about the standards you set. I don’t see any expectations from management being delivered here.

Edit* I had to add to my previous review as we had lunch here the following day and the food was really delicious. Smoked salmon and brown rice salad and barramundi spring rolls were superb. Upped my star rating by another half! Had dinner here last night as staying at the Mercure Resort. We both ordered the Barramundi, of which there’s a wide range of options. Mine was the grilled Barra with risotto. Both were a bit dry and the whole plate could have done with a sauce. The other half had the Sichuan Barra which was really delicious, but would be better described as a Nam Jim dressing than Sichuan. Good range of wines, but no beers on tap. Good service.

Barbra on Todd is well worth dinning at. The food was good. Barra Spring Rolls are a must for starters for main I went with a steak. I like fish but small amounts. Not being an expert on Barramundi probably because every fish outlet on the east coast claims everything they sell as being barramundi. I am no Rex Hunt when it comes to fish. The food I had her was good considering we are in the middle of out back Aus. Service was good. Staff are kept busy as the patrons grow. Will definitely be back again.

Poor value for money. The barramundi was small, and when I asked for water I assumed tap water but no, $5.50 bottle of water. On the positive side, really nice staff and service.

Went here for dinner. Starters of soup, Barra spring rolls, scallops and bruschetta all very nice. For mains the barramundi dishes are a must. Did not like the risotto with one of the dishes though. Pasta mains was very ordinary. Overall really nice and would return. Good service too
