Went with my family for lunch here, cant quite remember what I had ordered but the soup and noodles were so nice. Hope I can come again soon, I think this place is now one of my favourite ramen restaurants. The bowl was super filling and delicious
Love coming to Taros Ascot. The ramen is authentic and you can tell the owner is passionate about food and Japanese culture. Plenty of ramen options – tonkotsu shio shoyu miso bases. Every month there are special ramen dishes and was lucky to try Truffle ramen (truffle fettuccine, truffle oil and fresh shaved truffle) it had the signature tonkotsu broth and the richness was there. All dishes are customizable meaning you can control the noodle firmness, add or remove elements all on a convenient electronic order pad at the table. Pay up front one bill per table. Also served Japanese beers and drinks.
My favourite restaurant in Brisbane. Faultless Tonkotsu ramen, I have it with vermicelli noodles so it is low gluten (soup has soy sauce I think). Amazing kakiniku pork, worth adding that and The Works…big fan of their soya sauced eggs. Have eaten here dozens of times…even have the apron via their loyalty card. Husband likes the vegetarian stamina noodles and cheese gyoza. Don’t go on peak nights as it’s a bit mad…I like either eating off peak or ordering online. Love that they are MSG free and use local Bangalow Sweet Pork.
A staple of Brisbane’s food scene and a great gateway into the essentials of Japanese cuisine. This is very much a place you go with friends or family for a real casual catch up and meal.
Came here for Sunday lunch with my Mum. We help ourselves to a table and order from the iPad. Service is erratic today and I see a disgruntled patron leave after waiting 30 minutes for his lunch. My Fire Tonkotsu Ramen ($16.80) arrives within 10 minutes. I share it with Mum as I expect her meal to be delayed. The broth is hot and delicious with some chilli heat, ramen is chewy and the Chasiu (sliced pork) tender and tasty. Rating: 4.5/5.0The Chicken Karaage ($8.80) is hot from the fryer. The chicken is fried in old oil and is overcooked but is saved by the lime and tasty mayo. My last Chicken Karaage here rated 5/5 but todays dish rates 3.0/5.0Mums Shio Ramen ($15.80) arrives as we were about to leave the restaurant. It took 35 minutes! It is beautifully presented, with a light warm broth, chewy noodles and perfectly poached slices of chicken breast. Mum has lost her appetite so I eat most of her meal. I still enjoy the ramen and I rate it 4.0/5.0It is an oddity not to be greeted on arrival or thanked when paying or leaving a Japanese restaurant anywhere in the world. After several visits to this restaurant, this lack of courtesy seems to be the norm and is disappointing. The ordinary Chicken Karaage reduces the previous 4.0/5.0 rating to 3.5/5.0
We checked out the godfather or ramen in Brisbane – Taro’s.We got tonkotsu red (not spicy at all though unfortunately), miso pork, spicy tofu, wagyu tataki and gyoza. This place is consistently awesome – the tonkotsu was nice and thick, thin slice of chashu was tasty and it’s good quality pig so it can be forgiven being so small a portion. Just needed a bit more of a stir of the tare into the broth as it was a little under-seasoned at the top of the bowl – but still delicious. Noodles were nice and chewy – a major drawcard for this guy who makes his own noodles. Not that I’m a fan of making something if you don’t need to – but in this case it is worth the effort.Miso isn’t my thing and neither are thick noodles in ramen, but it was still tasty.Tofu – I don’t like tofu and this didn’t redeem it for me, but it was a huge portion which is good for people who like quantity.Gyoza – the filling was really underwhelming unfortunately – needed some basic seasoningTataki -nicely sous vide beef with a light ponzu, tasty, tender and light.Even with my criticisms, this place gets 5 stars. Im here for ramen and I come often and it’s mostly excellent so it deserves respect.
WARNING to those who are unfamiliar with the area! Dont park your cars in the small complex across from Taros!!! My partner and I usually go to the Taros in the city but decided to drive a bit further down to Ascot. This was our first time in that area so we decided to park in the small complex where the kebab shop is. BIG MISTAKE!! After walking back from getting cash out (approx 15 minutes) OUR CAR WAS TOWED!! And had to pocket out $450 to get our car back…plus no ramen!!However, despite our night being ruined we did come back for ramen a couple days later (making sure to park in Taros carpark this time). The usual friendly service and yummy fresh ramen you would expect at any Taros restaurant! We also noticed warning signed inside the restaurant warning patrons about the towing which we wished we saw earlier
