You couldn’t ask for more. Very fresh, well prepared food, excellent service and relaxed, cosy ambience. I’d definitely recommend this place to anyone in the area.
Quality Country Cuisine. The slightly austere atmosphere of a former country church in Ballandean is softened by the glowing light coming through the coloured glass of the window panels, and thrusts the focus on the food. In spite of its title, this amiable little place is much more than just a café, and hosts Penny and John Hodges offer a smart menu based on local seasonal produce whenever possible. One of our group has a soufflé as a starter, and gives it top marks. I have the special of pear and walnut soup with blue cheese croutons. It is so thick I can almost cut it, and it is superb. Two of us have pork fillet mains, which disappear rapidly. Our sweet-tooth has vanilla roast pears with butterscotch sauce, home-made orange cardamom and biscotti for dessert, and pronounces it sublime. The rest of us have a generous platter of local and French cheeses, accompanied by home-made quince paste, pears and crackers. Visitors who stay in the charming Vineyard Cottages have this on their doorstep, while for those who stay elsewhere in the Granite Belt, it is well worth the drive. It is a culinary gem.
Lovely atmosphere, lovely food and great service. We were the only ones dining at the restaurant, but instead of awkward experience, we got superb personalised service, which left us feeling truly valued.
Unexpected cuisine in the bush. An enthusiastic and friendly pair of owners have provide their those staying in their onsite cottages and those from elsewhere a surprising treat proving food you would expect to find in a city, in the bush. We have eaten here many times over the last decade and each year the food is of consistent high quality and the wine list impressive selection of mostly local bottles. John can tell you about the wines in detail as he compiled the list. I expect that much practical and pleasurable tasting went into compiling the list. The region produces much better wine than most give it credit.
