I’d rather give Malt 3.5 rating because three seems a bit unfair but I don’t think it was good enough to rate a four.We dined here for our wedding anniversary and chose the six course degustation with matching wines. We waited a little while for our first item to come out and then they came out very quickly, to the point that I was often not finished my previous wine before the next course hit the table. Not really a complaint, perhaps I’m just not a quick enough wine drinker!!We had dishes such as murray gold cod with cucumber and wasabi – delicious, however I could not taste even a touch of wasabi. This dish was still delicious and very refreshing. Second course was my favourite – kangaroo tataki, this was simply wonderful. The vegetarian course of mushrooms with pea dal and whey crepe was very disappointing. Neither of us enjoyed it but the wine it came with was delicious! The lamb dish was a touch over cooked, I’m not a huge fan of lamb at the best of times so this course was only ok for me. Both dessert courses were good, we both really enjoyed them. Our waiter was terrific, super friendly, knowledgeable and attentive without being annoying. The ambience of the restaurant was also nice and cosy.I don’t like only giving three stars because it was better than a three, however as some courses were a little underwhelming and for the price, I had much higher expectations. Malt has some amazing qualities so shouldn’t be overlooked, it just hasn’t been my favourite dining experience. lifelovetravelfood.wordpress.com
Came here on a Saturday night with friends. I ordered the beef with horseradish and beetroot. The beef was cooked well; however, I think the consensus round the table was that the duck far outshone the other proteins on offer. The chat potatoes were a delicious side.We shared the the white chocolate parfait with pumkin and the chocolate tonka with quince. The chocolate was my favourite – the quince was a lovely accompaniment to the richness of the chocolate. The white chocolate parfait was on the savoury side and I think I would’ve preferred the pumkin to be cold, not warm and a bit more texture in the dessert. The staff were very attentive and professional. The pianist added to the intimate atmosphere.
We ordered the Degustation menu.First course was an unremarkable Egg and Mustard San Choi Bao, second was a plain asian fusion salad that you’d easily make at home.Third course was an Eggplant Dumpling that was drowned in vinegar, couldn’t taste anything but vinegar.Fourth dish was a little bit of minced crab on two slices of tomato, deep fried oily bread and plain tofu, it felt like a fancy caf salad.Fifth dish was a Daikon Noodle, Mushroom, Egg and Miso broth, I actually enjoyed this dish, there was a sweetness which I couldn’t pinpoint where it came from, maybe Mirin, not sure but it was very tasty.Sixth dish was Beef Cheek, delicious and worth waiting for, tender, juicy and paired well with the mustard sauce and wine.Dessert was a Yuzu custard with meringue, I loved the texture of the meringue but there was little to no custard at all. Now, Service was great, staff were attentive and very professional. The restaurant itself, I felt was a little outdated. A messy combination of styles, cheap artwork and then an elegant lady playing the piano in the corner…which nobody does anymore. Unnecessarily pretentious, with the lack of a great dining experience to back them up. I’d give 2.5 stars, but unfortunately this app doesn’t allow for that.
Food: CDrinks: CVenue: CService: BSwordfish stank like day-old prawns, but tasted so bland. It was served on raspberry yoghurt too.Venue smelt like an old library, you know that dank carpet smell? No need to return. What we ordered: swordfish, potatoes, vodka and tap water.
