Fresh Food; Great Deal!. Fresh fish (not local), meals made on the spot, friendly ‘mum & pop’ shop and all at pretty good prices – this is a great place, mostly for take-away, but Hooked on Seafood does have 2 tables for two!Looking for a quick, inexpensive lunch, my partner and I stepped into Hooked on Seafood and happily found that although they had fresh fish fillets in a glass case, it did not smell of seafood at all! A friendly woman greeted us and answered our questions regarding their menu. We did find out that, unfortunately, the seafood wasn’t local as we were told that the fish sellers only sell to bigger establishments as it’s more beneficial to them. My partner and I thought that was a bit odd, but we took it at face value and placed our order.I went for the Bacon & Egg Burger ($7.80) which came with chips that could either be salted or chicken salted. On the server’s recommendation and another customer in the shop, I went for the chicken salted chips. My partner ordered the Red Emperor ($8) and again as recommended, chose the battered option, and a half serve of chicken salted chips ($3). We asked if we could get two cups of water but were told something to the effect of there was only hot water that came out of the pipes. Again, a bit strange, but whatever and luckily we had a bit left in our water bottle. We saw a few orders picked up and taken to go, which is always a good sign. It wasn’t long before our food appeared and we were ready to dig in.My partner’s Red Emperor was a singular piece which was nicely battered, not oily at all and was crunchy in texture. The fish itself was light in flavour and obviously very fresh. My bacon & egg burger was quite huge and served on a large square bun. Inside was a decent sized pattie topped with a fried egg (which was hot off the grill) and a big piece of bacon (nice and salty). It also contained shredded iceberg lettuce, beetroot and tomato sauce. Although everything was freshly done, I was surprised that the main flavour was that of the beetroot. The chicken salted chips were also hot and fresh, light and crispy and deliciously salted. (My partner found the chips a bit too salty so it comes down to preference). As for the chicken flavour, it was a nice touch. Subtle, but just noticeable enough to be different and enhance the potato in the chips.Overall, this place is of great value and no disputing how fresh everything is. The only things I’d like to see changed is that it would be nice if the fish was local, the food had a tad more flavour (spices in the beef pattie would have helped) and tap water available. Other than that, Hooked on seafood is worth checking out and won’t be too hard on ones’ wallet!
