The same as the Golden Rice down the road at Sunnybank Hills Shopping Centre, I came across to this eatery many times and never thought about to explore them. Maybe there was bias that my taste buds were not keen on the Taiwanese cuisine; indeed, it proves that Iam wrong and my palate tell me that there are so many Taiwanese restaurants in Southside of Brisbane. Jing Star should be one of those. In order to compare the favourite dish that I had at the Golden Rice, I purposefully ordered the mixed vegetables, glass noodles topped with egg, pork intestines & Tofu in Chilli (one of the Taiwanese famous dishes) and an order of beef roll. First came was the mixed vegetables topped with eggs. Wow, the egg was scrambled and pan-fried in the shape of hat and covered up all the contents. Ingredients of mixed vegetables and glass noodles were deliciously matched with the appropriate amount of sauce. Next was the Pork intestines, which deserved thumb-up due to the culinary skill of the chef. Balanced spiciness from the sliced fresh chilli just perfectly covered the negative impact of the odour from the chittering if there is any. Actually, the thickening of the sauce brought the whole dish to the next level, which was not too thin or too thick, spot-on! Then, the beef roll came the last, which again reflected the skill of the chef. Nice pan-fried crispy pastry wrapped with sliced beef and accompanied with dashes of Hoisin sauces, which definitely made my day. Thank you for such unforgettable Sunday lunch.
I can only review Jingstar based on the Taiwanese Beef Roll I had from there which came from a recommendation by the owner of Plum Street. The skin was perfectly crispy, the beef tender and just the right amount of Hoi Sin sauce…..awesome!!!
Meeting up with my relatives for lunch brought me to this place, tucked away at the end of the small collection of shops in the Pinelands plaza region. Be careful though as our GPS said that 70 pinelands was actually the larger main complex, rather than the actual number 70 further down the road. The shop itself is rather small, only a handful of tables, with a small service counter, and your typical menu items written in Chinese and some sporadic English on bits of A4 paper plastered here and there. We didn’t do the ordering, but not that long after ordering, dishes began to start streaming out of the kitchen and onto the table. Some were standard classics (like mince and beans with some chilli, salt and chilli fish, 3-cup basil and garlic chicken, etc), plus some weird dishes like prawn and pineapple with mayonaise… hrmm. However, as weird as even the unusual dishes were, the quality and taste was more than passable. I didn’t find them too salty or sweet, nor terribly oily, however my tastebuds have been for most of my life acclimatised to Taiwanese home cooking, plus many other restaurants of similar nature (as my relatives have a tendancy to hit up every new Taiwanese eating place to criticise them if possible, and then to decide if they should ever go eat there again, which obviously this place passes their litmus test with flying colours as they seemed to know the other regular customers who came in while we were eating there). We had rice also served but it was pre-filled bowls of rice, rather than a mass self-serving situation, which was fine for me.I would say that coming here, you’re not going to get any atmosphere. What you will get however is fairly decent ‘authentic’ home-style Taiwanese cooking. If you’re looking for high-end Taiwanese cooking, well, you’ll probably not find it here either.
we have always had amazing food and service one our family’s favourite place’s to go and we are western/chinese family delicous meals
Hmmmm….. I came with friends a few nights ago….we had no plans on coming here but chose to give this place a try as all of us were pretty hungry and we were too lazy to drive far. When we entered, it wasn’t busy busy – a few tables but not a lot of people all up. We were given our table, sat, and chose our dishes. The mixed vegetable with egg came first….the plus side was that it had a variety of vegetables…however the downside was that it was wayy to oily…had to drink numerous cups of water and tea to rid of the after taste. The three cups chicken was alright – again wayy too oily..and there wasn’t a ton of meat on the pieces of chicken – just skin and bones, the flavour was there and not there if you get what I mean. We also ordered chicken with cashews which again was oily but this time no flavour. The service was alright but overall, the night was just so-so. If I had to come back… maybe wouldn’t…deterred by the oily food and absence of flavour.
Terrible Service – Don’t expect too much. If you’re expecting large servings of food, accompanied with terrible service (i.e getting you to move tables when you’re half way through your food, as well as not getting what you ordered), then here is the right place to come to! (Note the sarcasm)From a Taiwanese restaurant that touts large servings at low prices, this place has been unsurprisingly popular for a long time at the Pinelands region.Usually, you’d expect service to be wonderful here as well, since the waitresses are genuinely Taiwanese. Now, I’m not here to flame the Taiwanese for cooking bad food (I am Taiwanese myself and I am very proud of our cuisine), but I’d never had associated terrible service to come along as a package. We ordered the light lunch sets with rice (with an egg on top), cabbage, and some tofu in sauce, as well as side dishes such as sweet and sour chicken, and stir-fried beef with tofu. Unfortunately the waitresses mixed up the stir-fried beef with tofu side dish with another dish, so we ended up accepting the other tables’ dish (which was something very undesirable) with her flimsy ‘sorry’. The food here is pretty average – I did enjoy my sweet and sour chicken with the rice. Now, here comes the next part – lunch time is a disastrous time for quiet eating and enjoying food there (and I highly doubt dinner time is any better). As you’d expect, a whole crowd of people started coming towards the already full restaurant. Having no idea how to cope with all the customers waiting outside, one of the waitresses came and approached us, asking if we could move to a smaller table since they’re so many people waiting outside whilst we were half way through our food. First of all, we were half way through our food and already seated long ago these people had arrived. Secondly, when we first entered the restaurant, it was the waitress who had pin pointed the bigger table and allowed us to sit there whilst waiting for our food – my point here is saying that, we, as customers, didn’t even choose our table, and yet, seeing the lunch time crowd, you’re trying to get us to move? This is an unbelievely rude gesture to your customers.Disclaimer: this review is based on my personal experience to this restaurant. I am no way personally attacking the staff/restaurant – usually I’d say that I merely want to see an improvement with my next visit to this place, but trust me, this is a place where I’ll never step foot into again.
Not cooked. Driving pass Sunnybank hills with a friend and decide to visit this little restaurant. It was very quiet, but we thought we will give them some support. But the food was slow to come out and the pork is medium rare, end up eating half of my plate. Tasted ok. Lucky I didn’t get sick that night 🙂
