TL:DR: This is a coffee shop that is done right, and what they offer inside is worth it. Stay for a bit in the cool, and soak in the vibes with some nice coffee. They know their audience well with the way that it absorbs the attraction of student life at university and the whole vibe of an urban village. At the bottom of the hill from the Kelvin Grove QUT campus, the urban village center starts with this little place on the corner right underneath all the newly built student apartments. In brevity, this acts well as the local coffee shop for the university students with the vibe, the good fare on offer, some nice coffee, and value that is not too bad. It has been three times that I have visited this place, most of the time mid-way through the morning shift at work – an additional one was during the lunch break before getting back to the afternoon shift, and each time it was just as good as the last. With the spoilers already ahead, the best way to describe the Boys House of Coffee is that it is consistently adequate cafe that suits the student life well to a T, and this is readily apparent to someone who is more or less on the outside of that these days. When it comes to the service, it is pretty much at the right level – good, friendly and maybe a bit more leisurely than many of its neighbours. It essentially going up to the counter and placing the order, followed up by paying up front and then next waiting for the meal to arrive. While I did say that it was a bit leisurely, the meals are still cooked quickly and come to the table without much ado; a bit more onto that is that, all the items arrive in quick succession making it look well organised and efficient. Let’s put the aesthetic into perspective this way: it has a contrast all-round to it from the outside look to actually taking a seat inside. While a lot of breakfast places and cafes seem to soak up the sun and make use of al fresco dining, this place is shaded by a huge tree and is somewhat dank. That could well give it a cold feeling to it, but somehow it works to its advantage – cosy isn’t quite the word to use it, but it does have some kind of comfort within the atmosphere, so it is not too far off the adequate description. With the right touches around the place, which include pieces of street art here and there, and this causes it to appear as if it were in a totally different part of town. That adds to its distinct charm. The interior is comfortable, both dark and cool, and it makes for a good little place to sit at and have a meal – this is one place takeaway does not seem right. As per normal, each time that I have been here it was for the usual coffee order – that is, a doppio. The coffee that they have here is a rarer blend of coffee, so I really can’t collectively talk about it. What can be said from the times here is that the coffee is not too bad, it tastes decent and does have a bit of strength to it, and the baristas here know how to make a decent cup each time. So it is worth coming here for the Joe alone, but it is not without some other fare that is of a decent quality. Each time I have been here, it has somehow involved getting an order of fries. First time around, it was more of an impulse – needed something a bit quick to eat – and from the next couple of times, since they themselves were so good they have been ordered. Getting the regular menu serving, the portion is pretty generous and able to be shared between several people – or a substantial snack for one. What makes them so good, at least to my opinion, is that these are beer-battered which means that they will be hotter, have more of a crispy texture, and not require as much seasoning as other kinds of fries; in fact, just a generous sprinkling of salt is all that is needed for these beauties, which are tasty to the last bite. The second time around trying here, I got the coffee and fries as such, as well as a bit of something more substantial. That was a savoury muffin, which was filled with all sorts of ingredients such as cheese, ham, zucchini and onion. It was substantial, an alright snack that was tasty and also fresh. On the side, the fries as per usual were delicious as was the coffee. With the review on the back-burner, that meant there was the chance to give the review more meat – which is something I willingly do, especially if there is a bit more to try of the place. It was opportune as well, and this was just down the road. From seeing it the first couple of times, I wondered how I would get here to try a particular special if were possible and that did not need any more worry – albeit not on the board, that was a version of eggs Benedict using a potato rosti as the bread. So that was the usual lot of items gotten, the poached eggs soft, hollandaise sauce, spinach, and I chose bacon was the meat – requested crispy of course. It was all pretty delicious, with the rosti being hot and crispy, plus the eggs were plump, the bacon was definitely cooked to being crispy (it was like a chip) and the sides of spinach and hollandaise sauce were both good in their own way. And the side of fries was good for a third time lucky. It was filling, it was tasty, and definitely not one of the healthiest meals I have had – for what it was worth, I was satiated. Again we find ourselves that the 4.0 score again, which means any number of things. In this instance, what it indicates here is that Boys House of Coffee doesn’t really have anything too outstanding about it aside from managing to decent quality fare (and sizable portions don’t hurt either) and perhaps managing to get the coffee shop aesthetic put into place; but when it is solid enough, and each of the needed aspects are working at a respectable enough level then credit is certainly due. It doesn’t merely not suck – otherwise why would I return a couple more times? – but it is serviceable, it is solid, and works well for its customer base. It has been within the Urban Village for a number of years and it looks to be continuing that way for the very reasons that were discussed.

I’ll start by saying this place does great coffee. I came for breakfast mid-week and it was super busy with lots of patrons grabbing their morning coffee. We ordered Turkish toast with avocado and feta and two coffees. The coffee took AGES to arrive. I suppose as it’s primarily a takeaway coffee shop the focus is on takeaway coffee customers which I totally understand but I was surprised that it took a good 20mins for our coffees to be made. Half the staff were lovely, half it wouldn’t kill them to crack a smile. The breakfast menu is surprisingly expensive, especially in a student focused area. It was nice and tasted really fresh but I think I’d only return for coffee. lifelovetravelfood.wordpress.com

Cute looking cafe too bad they have no gluten free food. Staff were not helpful in assisting me in finding gluten free options on menu they just discarded my questions and said they didn’t have any gluten free bread.

Ordered bacon and egggs on focaccia but it came on bread. No explanation why or apology. The food was nice but it wasn’t what I paid for or order. Again I find them very arrogant for a busy that is in the service industry.

Dropped in on a half hour break and ordered the avocado and feta smash on sourdough and a flat white, both of which were delicious. Service was fast (we got our food within 10 minutes of ordering). Cute cafe with awesome interiors and food.

Being nice works. It took 45 minutes long to send out my toasted sandwich because all the staff ‘forgot’ about it. I initially thought they we’re having a go at me after reading these reviews. I managed to say it’s ok, laugh it off and assure them that I wasn’t angry as they were very concerned and apologetic. They came back in 2 minutes with my sandwich and a free cheesecake muffin (which is around $6 I think). I think some customers need to chill out, people make mistakes and all you have to do is remind them in a nice tone and be understanding.

Not worth the poor service. This place has great food (amazing muffins!), but I always have to mentally prepare myself for dealing with the staff . You are never a priority when you enter the store. If staff are having a gossip, then you have to wait until they finish before they’ll even acknowledge you. And even while attending to you, they will continue gossiping with each other rather than paying attention. You will regularly hear them bickering or being narky with one another as well, which is quite uncomfortable for customers. The amount of time you have to wait for a coffee, or simply for them to put a muffin in a bag and hand it to you, is absolutely ridiculous. Less gossip and more service would go a long way.
