Right down the bottom of the Kirra Surf apartment, a stone’s throw from one of the Gold Coast’s most underrated beaches complete with it in view – Beaches might be at the pinnacle yet to what I know as the place to be seen. There is nothing at all pretentious that is to be found around here; my parents – who let’s say are fairly close around here – have told me about it, and how the coffee is really good. Upon visiting them, and that it is easy now, it was only a matter of time before this was ticked off the list. Nearing the end of a stay with my parents, it was now my turn to shout the meal. For all this time they had been talking about how good Beaches on Kirra was, and just how close it was as well. You only need to be walking past at any time of business, and there are differing levels of business in there – but at each time, it is far from getting deserted. A good reason for that exists, which is that at any one time customers can waltz on in and enjoy the tasty food that is on offer – this is one of the most open restaurants in this area yet. As it has been mentioned, the service is always on the go. The staff here are friendly, busy and hard-working. Not one beat is being missed to clear the tables and make it look inviting to the next guest who comes on by. It is quick and efficient for a stop in, if that is your mode of eating at the time. While not a vital aspect, it can be a life-saver and add more to the local reputation. With the decor, it fits into the curvature of the sidewalk very well and is quite simple with an obvious beach theme. The atmosphere is laid back, and many of the tables are communal (where I sat with my parents certainly was). This eatery is two stories, which can allow even more people are able to waltz right in – particularly on a busy day. On the second level is a bar plus functions are often booked in there plus during the mornings there is also yoga classes on. I haven’t been up there yet, but I can imagine the view. It is also common to have artists playing live music on weekend nights. With the menu, the basic layout is the cafe fare that is come to be expected. Notably, like most Australian cafes an Italian influence will pop-up in prominence, and it has a fair presence this time around. Starting off, it has a good breakfast menu that is one third light fare including muesli, granola and such with the remainder being more substantial if wholesome meals. Going on to lunch, it comes down to some tapas, several burgers/wraps, salads and then bigger meals which generally have a big lot of meat as the centrepiece. Pizzas and desserts wrap up the main part of the food menu. Aside from that, you have the dessert cabinet, several nights of the week have a $15 special and an extensive beverages menu that has beers, wines, spirits and cocktails among others. This is a people pleasing place, and it is one that acknowledges you can account for quality while doing that. For any time of day, you are sorted. The coffee that Beaches uses is the Storey Blend by DeGabriel, and that is one that has not made its way up to Brisbane yet – or at least, I have not found it. Of course, if it involves breakfast, it is likely going to involve coffee with me. As per usual, the doppio my choice of drink. It was a pleasant tasting little morsel, hot and strong. For me, the breakfast was none other than a classic – eggs benedict. The poached eggs on sourdough with choice of meat (ham I went with), spinach and a pouring of hollandaise sauce. Call it basic, call it cliched, but this is one dish that can always be a reliable choice. My dad went for the breakfast burrito, and my mum went for the dukkha poached eggs. The breakfast burrito was a mixture of scrambled eggs, bacon, smashed avocado, rocket, sweet chili sauce, and melted cheese. The dukkha poached eggs were poached and coated with dukkha, then served on top of Turkish bread with hummus and a side of Persian feta. All three of these meals were tasty on their own merits, were served with a generous portion and filling. Each time the egg was soft and plump, with the yolk seeping out upon being pricked. Starting with the benedict, the ham was tasty and tender smothered in a generous amount of hollandaise sauce (which did not lack in taste) along with a handful of fresh spinach. It’s hard not to do well, and this was a good entry for the classic breakfast. Next up is the breakfast burrito, which was really good as well. The eggs were fluffy and must have had a fair bit of milk added to them. In it, the sweet chili sauce added its distinct flavour plus the bacon was crispy and plentiful along with the creamy avocado and a good finisher of cheese. Truth be told, this was the main meal that I had my eye on in coming here. The tortilla was soft and fluffy, and whoever folded this did it so well that nothing dripped out. Lastly, I tried bits and pieces from the dukkha poached eggs. The feta cheese was strong and creamy, the Turkish bread was toasted perfectly and it was another good, fresh dish. All three of them are winners in my book. My parents often wait until the last part of the meal to go and get coffee now, and this was such an instance. I must have gotten this thought process from them, that getting a coffee out often feels lacking without a small bit of something sweet on the side. What took their fancy was one of the muffins on display. From memory, I recall the flavour being white chocolate and raspberry. Soft and fresh, the flavours inside were distinct and they certainly had the actual items that were mentioned. Plus the size of it was easily dividable between several people. This was such a finish to a good meal. Because I like my coffee, and can be a mad bugger with how much of it I drink, I took this opportunity to get the triple shot which was on offer. Again, this was a good cup of coffee and it still was not so bitter despite having so much coffee put into it. Their reputation with their baristas is well earned. Beaches is a wholesome entry in the dining scene around Coolangatta. It is more of the local, social hub than anything. It has definitely won its reputation fair and square, and 4.0 sums up the low key, good quality fare that you are sure to be in for coming right here. The staff are firing on many cylinders to create one well-rounded institution that is good for everybody.

Beaches on Kirra was a pleasant escape from the windy conditions today; the food was delicious – I had the thai calamari salad, the kids had fish & chips and my partner had the biggest Angus beef burger (with everything) on Earth. Lightning fast service, friendly staff ($80 to feed a family of 4). Definitely on our list to return to next time we’re down the coast.

We really like this place. Have only been eating at Beaches for a few months now, but were informed the place had new owners/managers take over just a month or two before we tried it. Food is quite good (4 out of 5), full bar, friendly evening staff(5 out of 5), open and airy with a giant view of the ocean, live music. All around a good place. The only negative is that the prices are a little high, like most places on the touristy beach road. They do have specials going on certain days of the week that are good value however. Beaches seems to have a good mix of regulars and tourists. The regulars all seem like a friendly bunch and the music is laid back. Would recommend.

Lift your game . Very DISAPPOINTING. I have been to Beaches at KIrra Surf with my family of 6 on many occasions over the past years and have always found the food and service to be reasonable which is why we have been regular patrons. On our most recent visit this evening the food standard has apparently been lowered considerably. My pasta dish was the equivalent of a jar of Dolmio’s sauce poured over cold pasta (with apologies to Dolmio’s as their product tastes far superior). After what seemed to be an unreasonable wait our meals finally arrived – two of us had ordered the same pasts dishes -one arrived with parmesan cheese , the other without. The ‘neapolitan ‘ sauce was thick, dark ,extremely salty but otherwise lacking in flavour. As we were very hungry after a long day with little food I was determined to eat the meal regardless but after struggling for a while we asked if some parmesan cheese could be provided to make it at least palatable. After 3 requests and 10 minutes a small dish of probably less than 2grams of finely grated cheese was finally delivered. To our great surprise at the point of payment we had been charged an additional dollar for the ‘extra’ cheese when no cheese had been provided in the first place. I understand the business has recently changed hands but if this is the standard which will be offered then I would strongly advise other diners to steer well clear of this second rate establishment. VERY DISAPPOINTING !
