Scooters at Kirra – Coolangatta, QLD. With a small deli out the back, great ocean views & air plus an all-round relaxed vibe Scooters has opened fairly recently as of writing. So soon, it is making its impression on those living and/or staying nearby and has gained traction of an audience already. If you are choosing to dine here, the suggestion is that it is done on a day when you are not busy and have some time to kill. The orders did take quite a while to come out, which is not to some people’s liking. While that may test patience – and I will bring attention to the games that they have to play while waiting – this shows a strong guarantee that everything is freshly made with upmost care. Ultimately, I ended up really enjoying this place for the food that they had but also the people who work there. I often talk about good service, and it as a whole really just needs to meet a few basic criteria. To make an impression, there has to something quite memorable about it through general warmth, humour or whatnot. There was not one case here, but two. The first one was the flamboyant barista, who is well-known in the area and with the regulars; his name is Greg. The other was the enthusiastic waitress – sorry that I cannot remember her name. They both were entertaining, especially at a later part of the meal (more on that later). So my dining buddy and I came here, with the sign out the front reading about a $10 breakfast; this was a specific one – the basic bacon and eggs. That was what he got; I opted for the Spanish burrito. This beauty had several of the breakfast basics on it – bacon, scrambled egg, sausage (chorizo) – and a couple of items with more Mexcian influence – avocado, a tomato and onion salsa – plus on the side was a tiny tub of chili sauce. Being the self-thought brave folk that I am with spicy food – and partially with a complacent shrug – I poured the whole lot over my breakfast. With quick, incidental sniff of it afterwards I was surprised how hot it was by only smell. In retrospect, this was a warning. To drink, I got a cappuccino in a mug – a double shot by default – with an extra shot. The waitress was really surprised and Greg gave a good one-liner by implying how crazy it sounded. This coffee was really good, Greg is one talented barista. It had the right amount of flavour, of strength and a generally pleasant aroma. They used the Di Bella blend which has been growing on me recently. Now, onto the burrito. This was not a burrito in the general sense of the word; you could not wrap it up and eat by hand – it was cooked flat and the tortilla was crisped up. The amount of each item on the burrito was generous; totaled up there would not have been much to any bare space. The salsa was fresh and tasty, lots of tiny bits of tomato and onion were everywhere adding a healthy vibe to it. The bacon on it was cooked a bit before being crispy and the egg was a great topper on it. My favourite part of it all was the smoky chorizo – I am talking a whole sausage on it which absolutely rocked. Now, for the chili sauce. This was really spicy and after a while of eating it I started to feel a lot of sweat, the convulsions occasionally associated with really spicy food and kind of dehydrated. Combine this feeling with the buzz of a strong cup of coffee and you have what I was feeling. In brevity, there was a bit of dizziness along side it. Half-way through I thought to go to the counter and get a milkshake to calm down the sweats and heat; the flavour I chose was banana. This was what I needed, cool and smooth in flavour along with being able calm down the heat gradually afterwards. Thanks to that, I managed to finish my meal. By all means, this was fantastic. The spiciness fiasco was a lot of my fault – Greg made a good-natured comment saying he could easily handle it. It was all good quality, very relaxing and actually encouraging of taking your time; other places exist for a rush, this does not. For a good breakfast, I would consider returning if I am in the area. To try out their other menus could help further experience just how good this place is as a cafe. Good luck to it.
