Missed the spot of Blackwood Fish & Chips but discovered there was a Sunday market opening there so went to browse for any fresh produce. When I was walking along the market, I saw this attractive place with nice and clean set-up. From the photos and pictures stuck on the wall, it is easily notice that they are serving Grinders coffee so I decided to have a take-away coffee instead of their nice-looking smoothies. In addition, I realised that they are serving Banh Mi but I did not feel like to have one so leave to next time. Ha, forget to tell you that the coffee was really good for the cold Sunday morning…….
Gumballs – Logan Central, QLD. Sometimes it is the most left-field of finds that ends up leaving the biggest impressions on you, especially based on an anticipation to result ratio. A long story short, my dining buddy and I were in Logan and after the initial desired location was found closed this was remembered and we decided to give it a shot. It hit the spot in a couple of ways, most importantly that the food is delicious. Gumballs is a franchise which started in Singapore’s Chinatown some decades back as a drinks and dessert bar. This extended to other countries and with other food options, even going so far as to have a store selling Nasi Lemak. What you can get where will depend on which store you go to. This one just outside Brisbane is mostly a drinks bar with a few additional touches. If it weren’t for a sign near the train station, my dining buddy might not have thought of this place. Within and around the store there are signs pointing out specialties and special deals. One of these deals was to get a pork roll (may as well say what it is, the classic snack bahn mi) plus a choice of smoothie for $8.50. There is the classical Vietnamese iced coffee available here, but after politely asking if that is included I was told (also politely) that it was the drinks menu I had to choose from. Looking at the selection, I went for a Mocha Jive flavour. This was ultimately a winning combination. The banh mi comes with the fillings to be expected – cucumber, carrot, mint, pate spread, pork (lunch meat style) and the option of chili (my dining buddy asked for extra to be put onto mine). This is served in a crunchy baguette roll, and they fill it up generously. For a small hole-in-the-wall takeaway, there is absolutely not complaining. All the great flavours are there, they interact well in one another as it is expected. What makes the chili great is that it comes in bursts of spice, and you really notice it when it happens. For a few dollars and a quick bite, it is difficult to go by a great bahn mi. Then there was the smoothie – which was really just a glorified milkshake. The way it was served as akin to takeaway bubble tea. This was one of the best milkshakes that I have ever drunk, and one that did not feel like it cost a bit too much. They really packed in a lot of ice cream, as it was stone cold and thick; this would not have been drinkable with the average straw. The flavour was really strong, very much with the taste of chocolate; it makes me interested to try some of the other flavours out in the future. A surprise hit, and one that should certainly be tried out. Certainly a destination worthy of return visits.
Double Yum !!. We’ll this is one out of the box. We dropped in here to have the banh mi (pork roll) and smoothie deal for $8.50. I decided to have a small Grinder’s cappuccino for $2.90, instead of the smoothie, which I did not regret, despite the coffee being a little too hot. The roll however was sensational, a crisp baguette filled with pate, pork, pickled carrot, chilli, cumber, celery and extreme to dangerous tastiness. I had a sip of my friend’s smoothie and that was delicious too. This place is a hidden gem and is very inexpensive. If you go on a Sunday it has a nearby Asian street market that deserves to be sampled too. 2 thumbs up.
