My girlfriend could not stop raving about this joint so I finally caved and we went for dinner. From her exaggerated ramblings and the name of the place I expected the restaurant’s decor to be that of a feudal Chinese palace, the smells of rose water and mandarines cutting through the greasy air. I was wrong. It was cheap, it was nasty. The quality of the food was so bad it jarred the vibes of our date. The noxious and stifling smell of grease made me let slip a secret about a dubious rub n’ tug I’d received years prior in Japan, which didn’t help the success of the night. All in all I reckon this place is great, in the sense that it’s an experience, like seeing a bad film deliberately or eating mandarine peel. Don’t think about it, just go. The court awaits you.
Mandarin Court I’m reliably informed is a Gold Coast Legend, but more of a Gold Coast tragedy in my view. Compared to the ‘Legend’ Yum Cha restaurants I’ve had the pleasure of dining at, it’s more of a train wreck than a Legend. The food itself when it finally comes passed is good, but the inattentive and curt service is unforgivable, as is the decor and the cleanliness standards observed. You’d do well to give The Mandarin Court the ‘wide berth’ it so richly deserves and spend your hard earned elsewhere.
I dined here on a Thursday night. I had one of the best short soups and Mongolian lamp meals i have ever had. Generous servings of both and extremely tasty. Great service
Not exactly a favourite chinese restaurant. Interior design was a tad over-the-top. I get the whole Asian theme and stuff coming from a HK background but yeah, a tad too much. Food was quite yummy, not too bad.
The last remaining genuine Hong Kong style Yum Cha restaurant on the Gold Coast and, in my view, the best. Hong Kong chefs and every detail authentic. Here’s hoping they keep going for many years. Can’t get any better.
