Not being a local, I didn’t know where to head for a quick lunch on the Gold Coast recently. The nephew works for a caterer down there, and he suggested Caffeine Kings. Hubby, nephew and I headed there on a recent Sunday. It is housed in one of those long, narrow shops that you usually find in country towns. They have decorated it with dark grey walls and a fabulous mural down one side by John Kaye. We were expecting a bit of hipster cool, but the 3 young people serving were very friendly and helpful. Nephew and I had a Milo iced milk with Maltesers. It was an okay drink, but I would have liked way more Milo to give it some robust flavour. Would have been nice if the Maltesers were chopped up a bit rather than whole. Hubby had a vanilla milkshake; sadly not cold enough, and not enough vanilla flavouring. I had a poké bowl for lunch, with citrus ponzu dressing. But they forgot the dressing, and I couldn’t be bothered getting up to ask for some. Apart from that, I really enjoyed the brown rice with raw salmon, heaps of bright green edamame, pickled radish and avocado sprinkled in sesame seeds. Fresh and healthy and delicious. Hubby had a wagyu beef burger; he said the patty was slightly undercooked, and had way too much lettuce. He would have liked something extra in flavour; the brioche bun (why? why? too sweet for burgers!) was not a hit. Not really their fault, but I really wish cafés would stop using brioche for a savoury dish. The sauce on the burger was a huge plus though. Nephew had waffles with maple syrup and loads of bacon. He enjoyed it all.  It was very quiet when we were there; only one other table with a couple. And the staff did remind us to leave as they were shutting at 1pm. Considering that hubby and I are not the usual demographic for this sort of place, we had a very pleasant meal.

So when Jess and James Wren moved to the Gold Coast three years ago, they found little ‘Melbourne-style’ coffee, hence the idea of starting a laneway espresso bar on the coast serving the coffee they love. Enter Caffeine Kings, the former laundromat transformed into one of the funkiest fit outs in town. From the street, you’ll have to look hard to find Caffeine Kings. What is otherwise a dark-walled subway-like tunnel dotted with 44 gallon drum tables and a walled servery is lifted by an amazing wall of graffiti by artist John Kaye, whose art can also be seen on The 4217.
Great coffee 🙂 not super strong so I got an extra shot. But still good flavour. The menu and pastries also looked good, will try next time.
Had a piccolo coffee which was very nice. Avocado and eggs on sourdough was nice. The breakfast wasn’t anything too special as far as flavour goes but I was happy and full. The cafe is huge inside although I would have liked to sit outside where there were only a couple of tables.
