Wandering into the Food Court at Mt Ommaney Centre I walk past the familiar eateries. I’m drawn to the brightly lit bain maries at Mekong. The owner’s son explains how it all works. The plates are Large ($13), Medium ($11) and Small ($10) and after paying, one fills it up. This Vietnamese/Chinese family business has been operating for 2 years and the son and daughter seem friendly enough so I decide to pay for a $11 plate. The food is mostly Cantonese with the exception of the Chicken Curry. I take up the challenge to put on 10 varieties of food on my tiny plate. Mind you, each piece/scoop is carefully placed so it looks pleasing to the eye. I manage to sample the fried rice, curry chicken, potato scallop, honey chicken, lemon chicken, sweet & sour pork, omelette, fried wings, plum sauce wings and beef in black bean sauce. And here is my verdict! All the chicken dishes and the black bean beef are good. My fav dish is the Asian omelette which was beautifully soft and moist. The fried rice is passable but the sweet and sour pork is a failure with a tiny piece of pork covered by a humongous ball of dough. An interesting meal which brings me back to the 80’s when these food outlets were once popular in Australia.
