Some colleagues and I met for lunch at The Ship Inn last week. I went into the meal quite skeptical…my past experiences have been mediocre at best, but I was advised that they’ve completely revamped their menu in recent months.Myself and two others ordered the Beef Cheeks, while others in our party ordered the Chicken Wrap, Halloumi and Pumpkin Salad, and a couple Burgers.Much to my happy surprise, the Beef Cheeks were tender and delicious! The Beef Cheeks themselves rated a 4, but unfortunately the mashed potatoes they sat atop were absolutely chocked full of spring onions (scallions) and rated a 2. Overall, the dish rated a 3. Some creamy, buttery mashed potatoes and this dish would have been 4+.I also ordered a large order of Chips with Gravy and Ketchup. These were really nice and were enjoyed by many. These rated 3.4-4.The other dishes rated above average (3.5) to very good (4) according to most of my colleagues. The Ship Inn may not be my first choice at South Bank, but it has definitely improved greatly!*****15 June 2016Rated 2.5Conveniently located between the Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital and South Bank, the Ship Inn has all of the ingredients to be a great go-to gastro pub. Unfortunately, it misses the mark for me. I’ve been here four or five times over the past 18 months and have never once left thinking that the food (or dining experience) was anything better than average to slightly below average. I keep trying different dishes hoping to find one that will hit the mark, but thus far the beef cheeks, pulled pork burger, Philadelphia chicken, salads and steaks have all come up short. Will likely try one more time…really is convenient (and much less expensive than the restaurants around the corner at South Bank).
In the quieter end of Southbank, this classic building has a restaurant downstairs & bar upstairs. Food is decent in size, reasonably priced and very flavoursome. The calebreze pasta is delish!! Alfesco dining. Need to get back there!
The Ship is a truly forgettable experience. What was once a great historic pub has been ruined by modernising the interior so that it’s as bland as possible. There is even wallpaper designed to look like rustic exposed brickwork. Unfortunately that doesn’t cut it. So the atmosphere is nothing special. Service is ok – order food and drinks at the bar, and table service for meal delivery. The food is mediocre – an above average steak and chips was ruined by wilted salad greens (think brown, slimy bits of lettuce) and a wild mushroom sauce that contained no trace or flavour of any mushroom than common or garden variety white cup mushrooms. Prices are through the roof for average pub grub. The staff are friendly though, which almost resulted in 3 stars, but sadly the food was a letdown.
Have wedding booked for may they recommend a dj however he is totally unreliable failed to meet for appointment then didn’t return calls payed 200 deposit can’t risk using him as he is to unreliable Makes appointment and doesn’t keep them
Fantastic meal at the weekend. Pub meals in Brisbane can be unimaginative. Steak or fish and chips being the usual choices. The Ship Inn had these but also some other great choices too. I opted for the barramundi (and made a mental note to try the vegetarian basket next time). The fish was cooked to perfection and came with some great accompaniments – salad and some baked potato wedges. We ate in the beer garden which was lovely but they offer a quieter area inside as well. I wouldn’t classify it as fine dining but it was a very good pub meal.
really bad food– such a shame. i was keen on enjoying this place. we had the squid, pork belly and lamb cheeks. pork belly wasn’t caramelized (so, just imagine slow cooker pork belly without any caramelization before slow cooking). the squid were cut into really large clumsy pieces and was just greasy– not crispy. the chips with the squid were also soggy– this is actually really rare that people can muck up chips like this– something wrong with their deep frying technique. the wait staff were really nice though. maybe it was because we went on a wednesday night..
Great for a large group, generous portions and good wine prices, the selection is a little limited but when you are with friends it’s not that important. I had porterhouse with prawns. Friends had chips, vegetarian salad, nachos and rice.
