Meh. Really disappointing when you’ve been craving one for aaaaaaaaaages and haven’t had one in years. Tasteless, even with my extensive selection of sauces. Bummer.
Hand Held Hankering. Maybe it’s just because I don’t get drunk anymore, but I don’t see many people eating kebabs around Brisbane. I don’t know why; they’re healthy and cheap, they have lots of fresh (ideally) salad-y stuff on them, and you can hold them IN JUST ONE hand, leaving the other free for playing rugby or frisbee or something. And they taste GREAT. I had a hankering in Stones’ Corner the other day and found ISPA Kebabs almost immediately, on the side opposite Aldi. It was low on the atmos, perhaps, with awful pink heart decals on the walls (I prefer the funky original tiles), but I didn’t care: I wanted FALAFEL. The salads on display looked pretty fresh (although, to be honest, I’m not usually that discerning) and the guy behind the counter was very sweet, so I ordered a large falafel kebab. They come with two falafel patties, heated up for your order, plus the standard choice of lettuce, tomato and onion, and sauces: hommus (chickpea and lemon juice), tahini (sesame seed), yoghurt and garlic, chilli and sweet chilli sauces, plus a few other extras like cheese and jalapenos and tabbouleh. I was with my four-year-old so we we eschewed the spicy stuff and went for went for tahini and yoghurt, with some tabbouleh alongside. It all got wrapped up in fresh flatbread and stuck in a toastie maker till the bread was all warm and a bit crunchy, for only seven bucks. Happy days!!! It was all SUPER fresh and light and delicious and we made an enormous mess eating it, but the lovely guy behind the counter didn’t mind a bit. My only criticism is that the sauces weren’t as flavoursome as they could be – but I suspect that, because people don’t eat there as often as they should, ISPA is forced into certain cost-cutting measures. And if a falafel tastes that good with slightly watery tahini, imagine how good it would taste with a full-blooded sauce – or with MEAT. Yum. So, help make ISPA’s sauces stronger: go!
