More than what we expected. We got the large sashimi. Generous sashimi serving sizes – each piece was about 2-3 times the size of usual sashimi piece. 20 pieces for about $36, well presented. Bento box was on special for a Wednesday night, $15. They only had one option though and it was a small serving size – 3 small chicken wings, 2 prawn nigiri, small amount of seaweed salad, edamame beans and a handful of rice. Would probably go back for the sashimi itself.
The service was great and the restaurant was relatively empty (we did go on a Thursday night though). The sushi was great – the $10 sushi special was definitely worth it! We also got an agedashi tofu (entree) which was light and the tempura noodle soup which was quite standard (nothing special).
After traipsing around Townsville, we were initially resigned when we returned to our lodgings. However, after our dinner, we were actually quite delighted with what is probably one of the very few Asian offerings and one of the few good restaurants in the area.We ordered mains, in addition to sushi and sashimi. On the whole, mains tend to be pretty dear (or more dear than other things at Sakana or at Japanese restaurants). However, we thought that the quality and relatively generous serving size of the curry made it a stand-out among the otherwise a bit underwhelming non-sushi mains. As for sushis and sashimi, we were impressed with what we were getting. We would be remiss in not recommending anything but the fresh, comparably more authentic sushi, without anything masking the taste and smell of fish.Service was excellent and ambience was pleasant and quiet without being too quiet, with patrons with a touch of class, reminding us of home (or at least some of the better parts of home). However, we noted that some patrons simply do not know how to hold wine glasses or eat civilly, though.Would recommend if you’re out and about in Townsville and looking for a nice restaurant, for food or for a nice place to have anything from a casual dinner to a semi-formal dinner.
Food was equivalent to what you get in Japan. Well presented. Good choice of beers. Decor was fairly new and clientele was not bogan. Recommend the platters.
