Dined here two nights ago. Service was atrocious. Restaurant wasn’t full however the place was seriously understaffed for a Saturday night. Food was OK but not memorable. Will not return and would not recommend.

We had heard this was a place to visit and so went with high expectations. It looks hip but it really doesn’t live up to it.The beers on offer were interesting but only two third of the taps were working. When we arrived there was one person serving about thirty people. Eight people queued at the bar, Uber bags filled one back table and plates of food choked the servery. For a place that serves specialist beer there was no apparent knowledge that was shared. The music was loud and heavy rock which seemed inappropriate to the young families that predominated. We asked if the music could be changed but were told that this is a rock bar and the best they could do was to change the paylist. The food was very ordinary. Soft shell crab bao was dull and the calamari salad was similar. On the whole it was a disappointment.

On our last night on holidays, we stopped in here for an early dinner. They were very accommodating with providing us a table big enough to fit our pram and have a high chair. The beer on tap is excellent – such a good range of craft beer so my beer-snob husband was VERY happy. The service was really good too – very happy to help answer questions and seem very passionate about their beer! The food was excellent. Perhaps a little small for the price, but delicious so I could forgive paying more. We had two types of bao (their speciality) which were absolutely excellent. The bao bun was SO soft and pillowy – you can tell it’s been made fresh and by someone who knows what they’re doing. We had a few other bits and pieces off the menu including gyoza (which were SO yum), all of which was packed full of flavour and extremely delicious. I would have loved to order more because everything we had was so tasty. Great place for excellent beer and flavour-packed food. Highly recommended.

For more food reviews follow me on Instagram @Degustation_Vacation It’s hard to go past Bao especially when they’re this good! The Soft Shell Crab was probably the best Bao I’ve had so far.Backbone is run by a bunch of good guys with good beards and badass beer selections in a nice setting conveniently close to the beach on the highway in Tugun.Hit them up for specials on a weekend and get sorted!Highly recommend heading for a bizz and a bao. I will certainly be returning soon.
