Had a brekkie at this cafe at the end of Feb. In fact, after I have perused the menu, I intended to try the beetroot & drill cured salmon gravalax. However, I was told that the head chef has not been started yet so they can only serve simple brekkie. Therefore, I just order a cup of coffee because the simple brekkie does not attract me at all. When the coffee was presented on my table, a good news was the chef arrived so I placed the same order again. In fact, it was worth for the wait, the salmon gravalax is one of the best dishes that I had for the last while year. Presentation, taste and culinary skill are all above average, it is really rarely to see a cafe serve special dish in the morning like this. If the presentation of my coffee is better, full mark should be deserved.Rating 4.5/5
Brooks & Stain? – Bumbling detectives? Laundry powder? Nope, a new(ish) kitchen/bar in the local village of Wilston. Hubby and I have been here 3 times over the last couple of months; twice for dinner, once for lunch. While lunch was okay, the dinners were superb. We headed there on a Friday night recently. Oh my word! Hubby and I were in heaven. We shared the beef cheeks and the potato rosti. As I said to Mr P., this is the best rosti I’ve ever had! And as for the beef cheeks – these were melt-in-your-mouth, tender, delicious I’m drooling here. The rosti was a delight, and clearly not just out of a packet in the freezer. The chargrilled eggplant, and the roasted beetroot were just the right texture, and full of flavour. The salad was fresh and zingy. Well, you get the idea, folks. In fact, I bumped up my rating from 8/10 to 9/10 in my head.Another Friday night we met up with friends, and had confit duck leg and mushroom risotto. Delightfully scrumptious! I love duck! The sherry vinegar jus added interest, the cauli was delicious (and tangy), the pear was a soft counter-point, and the duck was well cooked with a crispy skin. Restaurants sometimes charge what seems like a huge amount for duck, but this was good value. The confit duck dish on the current menu is without the cauli, but with ratatouille and enoki mushrooms, just so you know. The fellas both chose the mushroom risotto, which also had prosciutto and crispy pancetta. It was fabulous – creamy and flavoursome and delicious. And the crispy pancetta on top was a great accompaniment, adding texture and more flavour. It is sometimes a dangerous move to choose risotto (or cook it in a Masterchef competition) but this was another winner. And we shared truffle fries – Does anything need to be said about these wonders? Yum to thin, crispy fries with shaved parmesan and truffle oil. Anyway, these were delicious and moreish, but I’m sure you guessed that. (Check out my blog post for more delicious info. about this restaurant.)
Decided to try out this relatively new cafe for breakfast. Have to say the service is really attentive & friendly hence the score of 4. The breakfast menu is pretty basic so I decided to just order simple scrambled eggs with added tomatoes on the side for an extra $4! The tomatoes were very sweet I might add so I was happy with those & the scrambled eggs were fine. Other than that the coffee was ok apart from a large amount of foam on the flat white, good flavor & creamy
