It was my Uni graduation at the convention centre so I figure this would be a good place to go for lunch after as it is just across the road. I have been to the restaurant balcony upstairs and enjoyed it; the cafe is a nice area to enjoy the stone grill or even just fish and chips. I loved their fish and chips; the fish was so moist; I was getting full but couldn’t leave it on the plate. The stone grill beef and reef was also very nice it’s cool to cook your own. The service is good; meals came out promptly. Will return!

Nice lunch. Salt & pepper squid was great. Even the bogan snitz looked the part. Fairly big servings too Cheap $13 burgers. Great service . Really a top little spot

In the beginning i booked for the Balcony Restaurant (upstairs) however the next day i was notified by a staff member that the Balcony was booked for a function on the very same time i was planning to dine in. The staff handled the situation professionally though, by offering the best available seat in their restaurant downstairs (still nothing in comparison to upstairs but still much appreciated). When i arrived on the day, they quickly attended me and gave me the Balcony menu despite dining downstairs. They also offered us recommendations (250g rib eye and 300g sirloin steak, which was around $68 in total). I was really impressed with their level of customer service even after solving the issue through the phone and on a busy night where the place was filled with people.Onto the tasting, this was the second time I’ve had stone grill. The steak…once again was impressive! I cooked it to be around medium rare before eating it and throughout the whole cutting and cooking process, the stone grill remained burning hot. Each piece of meat was soft and juicy, although i would prefer if they seasoned it a little before taking it out to customers. The gravy did cover that part well as it was strong and spicy. The chips were a little disappointing though. They were all broken and it looked like we got the end batch of the packet. Majority of mine were burnt which was inedible. Cafe 129, brilliant place for some quality steak. If you’re looking for some quiet and great atmosphere feel i would recommend to pay the extra $10-$20 or so (per person) to dine upstairs at The Balcony. However, Cafe 129 still offers a similar experience when it comes to food quality.

This place was suggested by the staff of our hotel when we told them that we wanted steak. Note: This is not your typical steakhouse. Yes, you do get steaks … however, you have to cook them. Besides their regular menu, they also have specials for the day as well as cooked steaks. Here’s what we ordered – Chargrilled American T-Bone 400g, Stonegrill Rump 400g, Stonegrill Sirloin 250g, kangaroo skewers and crocodile skewers. With the exception of T-Bone, everything else was raw. Basically, they serve your meat on a hot stone. You then cut it into smaller pieces and cook it on the stone according to your taste. While I found the concept totally unique, I did not like the taste of the meat. It was too plain. I rather have my meat marinated, cooked and served to me. We tried out kangaroo for the first time as well and the braver among us tried out crocodile too. None of them were marinated and they tasted just too plain. The best part of dinner was probably the dessert. We ordered the sticky date pudding and it tasted really good. I would visit this place just once for their unique Stonegrill experience and nothing else. oftravelsandtales.weebly.com

Vastly disappointing!. I’ll clarify up front that we didn’t actually eat here. Three of us had a booking for 5:30pm for dinner on a Saturday night… our expectations were positive, having looked at their website. However, our jaws dropped as soon as we stepped in the door – very loud rock music, bare, cheap looking tables and chairs arranged in a featureless room immediately in front of what looked like nothing more than a public bar counter in a cheap (and run-down) hotel … and the clientele overall looked rather rough, though in character with the premises. We stood 4-5 minutes discussing whether we really wanted to eat there after all (none of us did) and in all that time no one approached us … their focus seemed to be entirely on serving drinks at the bar. We left.Absolutely shocked & flabbergasted that such a poorly presented venue continues to exist in the middle of one of Adelaide’s main shopping and tourist precincts. So disappointed, at this stage we will in future totally exclude the Strathmore Hotel, and all of it’s areas, when thinking of possible places to eat in Adelaide.

What a great place! The novelty of cooking my own food on a steaming hot stone. Service was great and the food was delicious including the sides of chips and coleslaw. Was surprised to see lobster and crocodile on the menu as these were a first for me. Delicious and loved the upstairs bird cage for drinks later
