Overall very average. Service was very slow on a week day while the restaurant was only 30% full. Staff was friendly but the food is overpriced and portions are very small. I had an entre a main and have been waiting for my desert for the last 30 minutes just like with everything else I ordered this evening. I’m now considering leaving and ordering a pizza so I can have some food for dinner after a long day of work… Won’t return nor recommend, there’s better options around.
VERY ENJOYABLE DINING EXPERIENCE. You can sense you are in for a good night when you first look at the menu and decide that you could order the complete first page from the Taster menu. Forget looking at the main courses let’s just order five taster dishes to share and we were not disappointed with the oysters, lemon squid strips, duck wontons, wagyu beef pie & sticky pork ribs. The only negative we could find was initial drink service was slow to be taken then slow to serve.Would we go back, yes, we made a booking for next week for their regular Duck, Pork & Pino dinner.
Terrible all round, overpriced, undercooked, amateur service.. We chose Sq as the menu looked very good with lots of variety. Unfortunately this was as good as it got. One or the worst performances I’ve ever come across. The waiter, although friendly was clearly out of his depth, this would not have been an issue had the meals been of quality. The Squid entree was actually very good and quite a decent serving considering the price and the side dishes also looked good. In hindsight I would have ordered just an entree and side plate as this would have been much better value than the mains. We had a group of 8. I ordered a large main ($32) and my portion was pretty much the same size as the small mains ($21) ordered by some of the others. The mains were definitely overpriced as although the meat portions were satisfactory there was little else on the plate. So at $30-40 per main and needing to order a side dish for $9 it becomes relatively expensive to get a decent serving. Most of the meals at the table were undercooked, some severely underdone. The kangaroo ordered med rare was very rare and bloody, the Salmon was completely raw in the middle unable to be cut easily with knife, the Swordfish was the worst only seared on the outside and had to be sent back and one of our group ordered steak well done and received medium rare. Hard to find anything else good to say about the experience, has the potential to be much better.
Fine dining prices with burger joint service. Biggest regret whilst staying at the Mantra was going to the SQ restaurant on the ground level of the hotel. We were attracted by the idea of Tuesday being seafood night. What a letdown. This restaurant is a conflicting combination of fine dining prices, with uninspiring dishes served by waiting staff with a skill set akin to those at a fast food burger joint. Our waitress was bubbly and friendly but at these prices… its not enough. We booked in person with her an hour prior to dining. When we returned she didn’t remember us. I ordered a $55 bottle of Riesling (amongst the cheapest on the list). She plonked it on the table in an ice bucket; did not present it, did not open it, did not pour it for us. Said ‘there you go’ and walked off.Our oyster entre was prompt and tasty. Our mains – both fish dishes were delicious but the portion sizes at $36 a pop were tiny & insulting. Upon finishing, our dishes sat there for an eternity whilst we unsuccessfully attempted to gain staff attention for more water that was never topped up (on a 38 degree day). All night the manager remained in the bar polishing glasses – not once checking on the floor. Very disappointing.
Disappointment. Made a phone booking for Saturday night. When we arrived, only one other inside table was occupied. The waiter didn’t ask if we had booked – perhaps they mainly get walk-ins or hotel guests. He offered us a choice of a couple of tables for two. We didn’t really like the tables as one was next to a pillar and the other was in the far corner of the room. We started towards a table set for four, near the centre of the room, but the waiter said that wasn’t available. He then said we could sit at any of the tables set for two, but when we headed for a window table, he then said not that one! We gave up and went to the far corner table. Only two other customers came in the whole time we were there, so that annoyed us. We were also annoyed that the meals came with nothing much and you had to buy side dishes – $9 for a salad and $9 for a bowl of coconut rice. We both decided on rabbit lasagne, which came with nothing else. It was $32 so we didn’t want to buy a $9 salad. The lasagnas came out and the pasta was overcooked and completely hard on the bottom and crisp on the top. The meat and sauce were quite tasty, but the meal definitely needed a salad, for a change of taste and texture. I struggled to finish mine as it was just the one gluggy texture with nothing else except the overcooked bits. When we got up to go to the bar and pay, we saw a specials board fixed high on a wall, which we hadn’t noticed and the waiter hadn’t bothered to inform us that it was there.
Sq lounge bar. Rude male bar staff, not child friendly. I’ve been there several times for drinks, and each time the service was excessively slow, won’t be back.
I came in to SQ for lunch today and was really impressed. I have a toddler and was really worried about how he would behave in the restaurant. I sat down and there was a bag next to his high chair with activities, crayons and stickers. Absolutely fantastic, it kept him amused for over an hour. Most impressive were the two floor staff that served us. They were great with my son, friendly and extremely helpful. The menu was great with lots of healthy options (that also tasted amazing). Would highly recommend SQ!
