Another lovely Balhannah place. After passing through The Lane/ Shaw & Smith, we had to try the Balhannah pub because someone had really recommended it to me. Best pubmeals ever! We had the lamb korma on sticks—- so tender and subtle in flavour. My vegetarian dish was a mixture of things, with falafel and stuffed flower and a saad with interesting herbs. Every bit was done well. I don’t know much about the chef, but he/ she sure knows what he/ she is doing
I have met here for family birthdays quite a few times. To be honest, it’s okay. The decor has some hints of proper design, but then it’s plastered with blue tacked posters for beer promotions. I quite like the wrought iron chairs with ‘Balhannah’ written on them. Not sure if for aesthetic or to make them tricky to steal. Either way, I like little things like that! The dining space is always busy and their meals are big, diverse and filling. I had the Chicken & Prosciutto Roulade which was big and delicious. The quinoa and vegetable salad was probably my favourite thing on the plate as it was zesty and really tasty. My partner had the duck… and he really didn’t like it. He said it was fatty (not rendered down enough), bland and disappointing. My coeliac nanna wasn’t that happy that she had to pay extra for Gluten Free bread.I enjoyed my meal, but some others on our table weren’t as happy.
Rudest staff. Bad customer service but food is ok. Basically went with my mother and the staff was either not trained or was in a very bad mood. Mum only tried to talk to her but she daggered my mother.
Nice pub in the Adelaide Hills well worth a visit . I had the chicken rouladeAnd found the meal delicious. Also a good wine list . I wouldn’t hesitateTo come back again next time I’m in the area .
Family dinner on Sunday night. Quick friendly service from staff. I think the overall rating from all of the group was 5/10. Highest rating was for the schnitzel, lowest for the burger and mid range for the pork/crayfish special and warm beetroot salad. It was felt the flavour combination for the two latter was confusing.
Always been very impressed with the quality of food here. The flavours are unique and work well together for example the blood orange & apple in salads, and orange marmalade & chilli yoghurt sauce with bush spiced calamari. A testament to a chef that has creativity & likes to be a bit more adventurous. The service is always good too. Will definitely be coming back for more!
Well worth the walk..go there immediately. This is one of the best restaurants I have ever been to in my life, and I’m not exaggerating. It was a cold dark night in Oakbank, and we’d walked 7km from our accommodation to find food. We’d heard on the wire from a horse trainer in town for the Oakbank races that there was a ‘good pub’ in the town, and thankfully we didn’t settle for the first one we crossed, which was only serving pizza. We might as well have ordered in, we thought, as we kept walking. We arrived cold and starving at the quaint little pub with the understated name – and were glad we did. Entree was a trio of homemate dips with turkish bread and olive oil, which went down a treat with the Shiraz (the name escapes me) we’d ordered from the bar. For mains I had the most perfectly cooked sizzling garlic prawns I’d ever eaten in my life, accompanied by more fresh bread. My mum had a goats’ cheese and vegetable gnocci, which was again – perfection. Looking at other tables, the meals coming out of the kitchen were as beautifully presented and looked just as appetising as ours did. The chef here is clearly passionate about what he does for a living and takes pride in every meal he prepares. We couldn’t believe that such a treasure could be found at reasonable pub prices, which could have charged Rockpool prices and you’d still feel like you got value for money. I feel like this is a rare gem we found, but the experience was too good to keep a secret. Go – before the chef gets poached by a fine dining establishment!
