Potential but too slow and not hot!. After looking forward to a wonderful evening of good food in a wonderful old building, it started off not so greatly with very few wines available by the glass. I understand wastage is an issue but a little more choice would be greatly appreciated. Food lovers tend to be wine lovers so some choice is essential in my view.We were told to be seated by 7pm which we were but the entree, which was wonderful, full of fresh and lively flavours came out at 7.40pm and we were the third table of two people served. The main came out more than an hour after the entree and again we were the third table served but very sadly the food was not hot. In fact the chicken was warm at best with most of my dish cool. My partners dish apparently was a little warmer but both were no where near hot. Because of the complex flavours used, this lack of heat in the dish left most of the main tasting bland and dull. The vegetable mash tasted like it had potential but again, because of its temperature, it tasted like dull baby food. What a shame. I really think that if our food was hotter the flavours would be more alive and interesting. In the end we left at just before 9pm, as we did not want to wait for dessert with the likely hood of disappointment. All this for $79 per head for food only. Given the nature of this menu, no choices, it all should have come out easily and in a timely manner. The staff gave me no indication of problems in the kitchen so I assume this is normal practice. Sadly we will not be back.
Pleasure to be had. We stayed at the hotel associated with the restaurant for a couple of days. The ‘welcome’ afternoon tea was exceptional with soft Brie, grape and walnut bread, macaroons, fresh fruit and tea. Dinner was a la carte which isn’t always what we enjoy but it was wonderful. The tofu was excellent – the sauce just a tad salty for our taste. The main was perfectly cooked lamb with interesting vegetable accompaniments and the desert was the piece de resistance. We had it in our room, served on thin gold a pier mâché plates with five or six small items. The absolute best fresh nougat I’ve ever eaten, a fabulous florentine, macaroon, chocolate tart with a tiny crumble of salt flakes, a perfect gold square of jelly flavored with wine, apricot liquer and infused with cinnamon and a thin crisp biscuit. We’d go again in a heartbeat. Lovely service – if a bit slow.
