Second visit to Penny’s Hill and was a bit disappointed at our visit. Firstly our order was taken wrong for the entree, we were given an entree that we didn’t order. However we didn’t tell the waiter since we were hungry by then couldn’t be bothered changing it. Our bill was calculated wrong at end of the meal, it seemed like the they charged us the entree that never made it to the table as well as the wrong order. It was my fiance that went up to pay and I didn’t check the receipt till we drove half way back to Adelaide. It wasn’t a particularly cheap meal, so was disappointed at the service. The entrees were good, mains were average and the 2 desserts we ordered was a joke, did not live up our expectation. A bit embarrased as we took our parents visiting from NZ for this meal. Don’t think we will be back again. travelwithwinny.com

Delicious lunch today at Penny’s Hill – we opted for the ‘feed me’ option with matched wines, was good value at $80 per head. We were brought a selection of delicious things – freshly baked breads, scallop mousse in asian broth, oysters, sparkling shiraz and raspberry granita, and a super yummy eye fillet with watermelon/feta salad. We had a great lunch, service was brilliant. Will definitely be back! The view wasn’t bad either :o)

First trip to McLaren Vale since moving to SA. Food was a delight. Creative presentation, good use of produce and flavour. Wine was the let down surprisingly. Will be sure to bring friends for a long lunch (more than once), but I do hope they allow BYO.

Avoid. This restaurant is a rip-off. We had lunch on Sunday, and it’s a set-menu only. Following a heavy and unrefined soup in a shot-glass, we were presented with some small pickled mussels in a bottle with some potato chips. The second dish was chicken and it’s served cold – and dry. The third was some cabbage rolls which did not taste special at all. Finally was some beef which was overcooked and again, heavy, unrefined and not special at all.The ‘restaurant’ lacks atmosphere and charm, being an open room with some terrible, insipid art on the walls (with pricetags). There was no professional staff on hand. A young zombie-like girl served us with absolutely zero warmth or communication. You will pay $80.00 each (more if you bother with the wine) for insipid food that is served on one plate for two people, insufficient food overall, poor service and poor atmosphere. I do not know how this place has won awards, but take my word – there are much, much better options around Adelaide to spend $180.00 for two. I would have rated my experience as ‘ordinary’ had we paid less than half of that.

We found this restaurant faultless. I had the Smoked Beef which was just so. My wife had the Pork which she found delicious. Almost best of all was the Cos lettuce salad, simple but exquisite. A superb experience.

Very Unhappy. I’ve lunched here before, about a year and a half ago, and it was brilliant– but this time (unfortunately when I brought four friends along), it couldn’t have been too much worse. Service was incredibly slow, almost an hour waiting for food, then when the food came it was so underwhelming and of such meagreness for the price that we were just stunned. Two ordered the Ploughman’s Platter, which traditionally should have been a hearty serve of food…. the exact menu item that was offered for $18 just outside the door in the winetasting area was priced at $34 in the dining room. We even asked the waitress if they were the same dish.Ten dollars would have been a really high price to pay for what was on the plate. The other two, a garfish dish and a smoked beef dish were so negligible that their consumers were barracking for a yiros hit after the meal. Ironically, my ‘grilled cos’ plate (yes, a couple small heads of baby cos, grilled and dressed with some delicious creamy stuff and pine nuts) was the most filling dish on the table. We have to give the dining room manager full marks for taking in our feedback and offering us complimentary coffees and wine…. this was greatly appreciated, she was very diplomatic. But the chef, who came to exchange words with us while we were paying, had the nerve to tell us the $34 Ploughman’s Platter was a starter/appetizer/entree!!!! This we found absolutely hilarious. An Ethiopian Ploughman’s Platter would have had more food on it.

Staff are not organised thus the ability to purchase anything was eliminated. In other words we were waiting for ages and ages for service and were overshot in favour of others who came in after us…..twice.
